If you want a closed-back planar headphone that delivers an open, airy soundstage with deep bass isolation for focused listening at home or in transit, choose DROP + MrSpeakers Ether; if you need an open-back flagship designed specifically for expansive soundstages and natural imaging in a quiet environment, choose Fostex TH1100RPmk2.
• DROP + MrSpeakers Ether: Delivers the rare combination of open-back realism with closed-back isolation using V-Planar drivers, but requires a dedicated amplifier due to its specific impedance profile and wired-only nature.
• Fostex TH1100RPmk2: Offers a lightweight magnesium alloy frame and 4th-generation planar drivers for a massive, natural soundstage, but sacrifices all noise isolation because it is strictly an open-back design.
• Who picks the Ether: The audiophile who demands high-end detail and low distortion without needing to leak sound into their surroundings, perfect for critical listening sessions or travel where silence is key.
• Who picks the Fostex: The listener who prioritizes spatial accuracy and breathability above all else, ideal for a dedicated home studio or a quiet room where external noise won't interfere.
The DROP + MrSpeakers Ether CX represents a fascinating engineering compromise that solves one of the biggest headaches in high-fidelity audio: the trade-off between isolation and sound quality. Most closed-back headphones suffer from a boxy, resonant sound because they trap air inside the ear cups. The Ether breaks this mold by utilizing Dan Clark's patented V-Planar technology. This driver design allows the diaphragm to "accordion" during large excursions, mimicking the behavior of an open-back driver while maintaining the physical seal of a closed cup. The result is a sonic signature that feels clean, relaxed, and incredibly realistic, yet keeps your music contained so others around you don't hear a thing.
This headphone is built for the person who treats their listening experience as a priority but lives in a shared world. Whether you are sitting in a coffee shop, working in an open-plan office, or trying to focus on a complex track without disturbing a sleeping partner, the Ether provides the necessary acoustic isolation. The carbon fiber cups not only look like something off a supercar lineup but also contribute to a rigid structure that minimizes unwanted vibrations. With memory foam ear pads wrapped in Japanese protein leather, the fit is secure enough for long sessions without becoming a source of fatigue, making it a serious contender for anyone looking for premium comfort alongside performance.

However, this product is not for everyone. If you are looking for wireless freedom or battery life, the Ether will disappoint immediately because it is a purely wired device with a detachable 6.4-foot cable featuring a 4-pin XLR connector. You must have a compatible amplifier or DAC ready to drive these efficiently. Furthermore, while the sound is "open," it is still technically closed-back, meaning the air pressure changes slightly differently than a true open design. If your primary goal is absolute transparency and zero barrier between you and the room, this might feel slightly restrictive compared to a true open-back model, even though its tonal balance aims to mimic that openness perfectly.
The Fostex TH1100RPmk2 is a machine built for one purpose: to get out of the way and let the music play with maximum fidelity. As an open-back flagship, it does not attempt to isolate you from the world; instead, it invites the room into the listening equation. The design features double-layered aluminum apertures that enhance airflow, allowing the 4th-generation RP planar drivers to move with minimal restriction. This creates a soundstage that is expansive and natural, placing instruments in a three-dimensional space rather than just in front of your ears. The transient response is excellent, capturing the subtle attack and decay of notes with a precision that closed-back designs often struggle to match.
Comfort is a major selling point for the TH1100RPmk2, largely due to its chassis. By switching to a lightweight magnesium alloy frame, Fostex has reduced the overall weight by approximately 20% compared to traditional aluminum models. This reduction makes a tangible difference during marathon listening sessions, preventing the clamping force from becoming a burden on your head. The redesigned Mk2 ear pads utilize a two-layer foam structure covered in silk-protein leather, offering a softer touch and a refined acoustic seal that balances the need for airflow with skin comfort. For the enthusiast who spends hours dissecting recordings, this level of physical comfort is essential.
That said, the open-back nature of the TH1100RPmk2 dictates exactly where you can use it. Because there is no noise isolation, sound leaks out freely, and outside noise bleeds right in. You cannot wear these on a bus, in a busy cafe, or in a noisy household without ruining the experience. They are strictly for a controlled environment—a quiet living room, a dedicated home office, or a recording booth. If you value the ability to take your music anywhere, this headphone is a non-starter. It is a piece of furniture for your ears, best enjoyed when the rest of the world has been turned off.
• Best for Isolation and Privacy → DROP + MrSpeakers Ether: If you need to listen at high volumes without disturbing others or being disturbed by ambient noise, the closed-back design of the Ether is the only logical choice here.
• Best for Soundstage Width → Fostex TH1100RPmk2: If your primary metric is how wide and deep the audio image feels, the open-back architecture of the Fostex offers a more expansive, natural presentation that closed-back cans simply cannot replicate.
• Best for Portability (Wired) → DROP + MrSpeakers Ether: While both are wired, the Ether's ability to function effectively in noisy environments makes it far more portable for use outside a dedicated quiet room.
• Best for Long-Wear Comfort → Fostex TH1100RPmk2: The magnesium alloy frame and lighter weight make the Fostex physically less taxing over extended periods, provided you are in a quiet space.
• Best for Detail Retrieval in Bass → DROP + MrSpeakers Ether: The V-Planar driver technology ensures ultra-low distortion in the low bass region, delivering tight, punchy lows without the muddiness common in many closed-backs.
• Best for Airy, Natural Treble → Fostex TH1100RPmk2: The double-layered aluminum apertures allow for superior airflow, resulting in a treble response that feels less colored and more organic.
• Best for Shared Spaces → DROP + MrSpeakers Ether: In any setting where you share walls or proximity with others, the Ether prevents sound leakage, whereas the Fostex would be disruptive.
• Best for Dedicated Home Listening → Fostex TH1100RPmk2: If you have a private room where you control the acoustics and noise levels, the Fostex unlocks the full potential of high-resolution planar drivers.
In my opinion, I would buy the DROP + MrSpeakers Ether for almost any real-world scenario, including for cycling when used with appropriate safety awareness and volume limiting, because its versatility is unmatched. The ability to get that open-back sound quality while retaining the isolation of closed-backs means I can enjoy high-fidelity audio in my apartment, on a train, or in a park without compromising my environment or my hearing safety. While the Fostex TH1100RPmk2 is a magnificent instrument for a quiet sanctuary, the Ether's dual nature as a closed-back that sounds open gives it a functional advantage that fits modern life better. It is the smarter investment for someone who wants top-tier sound without being tethered to a silent room.
While neither is marketed as sport gear, the DROP + MrSpeakers Ether is the better option for active use because its closed-back design blocks wind noise and protects your hearing from loud traffic, provided you use a clip-on adapter for stability. The Fostex TH1100RPmk2 is too open and fragile for outdoor movement.
Both headphones feature planar magnetic drivers which generally benefit from dedicated amplification. The Ether has a lower impedance of 23 ohms, making it relatively easy to drive, but the Fostex may require more power to fully realize its dynamic range due to its efficiency characteristics.
The DROP + MrSpeakers Ether uses high-gloss carbon fiber cups and a NiTinol memory metal headband for durability and style, while the Fostex TH1100RPmk2 utilizes a lightweight magnesium alloy frame and double-layered aluminum apertures for acoustic performance and weight reduction.
You can connect both via the included adapters, but for optimal performance, especially with the Fostex, a dedicated DAC or amplifier is recommended to handle the planar drivers properly and ensure you aren't straining the phone's output.
