Climate Change: Why its Serious Problem

By Matt Clavido

Polar icecaps, weather, global

warming, all effected by climate change. Climate change doesn’t just affect us, but every living organism in the world. It’s all around us, climate change has been around for many years. Climate change is the result of cutting down trees, burning fossil fuels, and farming livestock. It is a serious matter because it doesn’t just determine our future, but this affects the lives of future generations.

The effects of climate change.

Some people do not know the importance of climate change and it is much bigger than what you might think. Climate change affects us humans as well as the living organisms on Earth. Humans’ health is affected by the food we eat and that food is affected by climate change. The water, weather, and air is also affected by climate change as the website https://19january2017snapshot.epa.gov/climate-impacts/climate-impacts-human-health_.html#:~:text=Climate%20change%20will%20likely%20increase,especially%20vulnerable%20to%20health%20impacts talks about. Air quality, one of the things affected by our climate changing , causes some people to have more frequent asthma attacks, affect our respiratory and cardiovascular health effects.

The website https://www.epa.gov/climatechange-science/basics-climate-change talks about the main contributors to climate change.

By Sabrina Rivas

This Month’s Events!!

Hey aviators! Ever wonder what's gonna happen this month? Well here in Dallas Ranch, we got so many upcoming events this month! Our first social was on April 28th, and there’s also another social for people who have a 3.0 or upcoming up on May 13th, and the 8th grade six flags trip is on May 31st and the Electives six flags trip is on the 20th of May. We also have a 3.0 dance on May 13th , a promotion , and a award ceremony. We will be having our non-six flag events in Dallas Ranch Middle School, and one extra thing is that we won’t have school on May 27th and 30th! The staff really wanted to reward the students after a long time of being in quarantine. So, get ready for the end of the year!!

How You Can Go!!

The Elective Six Flags Trip is only for students who has Leadership, Yearbook, Band/Orchestra, Video Production, and Impact as their class. The other Six Flags Trip is for all eighth graders who has a 2.0 and up as their 3rd quarter report card and 4th quarter progress report card. The eighth graders will rehearse for the promotion for the last day at school aka June 9th at Deer Valley Highschool. The open house is going to happen on May 5th where they are going to have food, the band performing and a student DJ so we can show the upcoming students and parents how DRMS works. We just also had our first social in YEARS and it went great!! There was a lot of food (cotton candy, pizza, slushies for example) and a bounce house and a DJ. The tickets were 5 to 7 dollars, and a lot of students came no matter what!

What's up with NFT's?

By Alexander Pang

If you have been on social media, you’ve most likely have seen or heard about NFT’s. As of now, you also probably know that these digital pieces (specifically) of art are all the rage right now, one most notably called “everydays the first 5000 days”, selling at a whopping $69.3 million dollars! These outrageous selling and purchasable receipts of art are created on OpenSea and Rarible, allowing ANYONE and EVERYONE permission to buy and sell NFT’s. This may seem like a quick and easy way to make money or a nice homage of a collectable to keep, but it might just be a key factor to climate change and global warming.

Details:

NFT’s, or Non-Fungible token, are irreplaceable pieces of Photos, Music, Art, Tweets, and even popular NBA clips of teams scoring a basket. You may think, “I want to make my own NFT”, but before you get too excited, there are some things to clarify. If we were to say that you want buy groceries from a debit card only store, you could make the transaction using a debit card and be done. It’s a Win – Win, you get your groceries, the cashier gets your money; however, you need to currently have enough money in your bank account to proceed the transaction. How does this have to do with NFT’s?

The Blockchain that NFT’s run on are essentially a public ledger, showing a public collection of trades people have made on the internet. So, what is necessarily wrong with it? Well, just like how a bank would take money out of your account, the Blockchain will post a notification on the ledger, showing the price paid between the buyer and seller. The issue with this is that it isn’t the bank who is keeping track of your money, but the Blockchain. Most NFT’s are stored on a Blockchain called Ethereum; they don’t care who is buying or who is selling, but if the trade can actually be possible. This is a major issue, because the machines that calculate these small trades use a lot of electricity, not to mention that they work all day/night.

Something you should know is that most of our electricity comes from power plants burning fossil fuels and putting more carbon in our atmosphere. Global warming was already an issue creating: droughts, storms, heat waves, rising sea levels, warming oceans, damaging ecosystems and habitats, etc. As our technology improves, so does the traction that comes with it and since the addition of Blockchain and NFT’s, our solution to solve this problem will become more difficult as NFT’s rise in popularity. It’s still unclear why someone would want to buy a RECIPT of a photo/video, not even allowing you to claim ownership. Whether you decide to make/buy one or not, that is up to you; if you want to make a difference for our future, maybe think twice before joining this trend since it’s anyone’s guess what will occur in the future. Something we do know is that we can prevent this from being a problem before it happens.

San Francisco Under Construction

By: Hailey Toliao

San Francisco is betting on a woman construction

project. They are betting $1 million on a project which will turn the $2.5 billion parking lot to a new neighborhood near the Giants Baseball stadium. Making new houses especially near the Baseball stadium will get more people to live in San Francisco. Mayor London Breed announced a new idea to prioritize the construction project for woman in San Francisco projects.

About 16 students graduated from Mission rock Academy, now are helping to work on the Mission Rock project and many more. The neighborhood will have about 1,200 resident units. Mission Rock Academy have also helped to get more females to be involved in this project. Their next step is to find when the project will be done. As of now the first few residents will be able to move in next year.

80s and 200s fashion

Have you ever wanted to go back in time and visit another decade?

The 1980s was an iconic time for fashion and style. Today we still have some similarities to the fashion from that time period. Let’s take an in-depth look.

Today I’m going to be talking to you about Styles now vs 80s style, it also takes place way back in the 80s and now. It shows the difference and similarities that time and fashion take us too. It also shows you and other people how the styles were back in the 80s up until now and where we kind of got some of our fashion from. It is also important because it can give people a new perspective of fashion

How 80s Fashion looked like

The 1980’s fashion was big, it was bright, and it was loud! If you were around in the 1980’s or had parents or family members around in the 1980’s then they might have worn some very large tops, perhaps some huge earrings (even if you’re a man), and had larger than life hair, and chances are you would have felt good about it too.

The 1980s was really a golden age of music and movies, and along with that came a renaissance of fashion. Celebrities like Madonna, Michael Jackson, Molly Ringwald, and Cyndi Lauper heavily influenced the masses when it came to 80s fashion. And even though it’s been decades since the 80s, we still look fondly back at the crazy (and cool) fashion trends of the time.

Why 80s Fashion Was Iconic

When we look back at 1980’s fashion, it’s clear to see that when it came to 80’s style it was all about making a statement. Whether that was wearing the biggest pair of shoulder pads you could find, rocking a huge, oversized slogan t-shirt, or perhaps something bright neon to get noticed. This is what 80’s fashion was, and it was a decade that still influences how we dress even decades later. With a huge emphasis on aggressive clothes and iconic accessories, the 80’s is a decade that’s not likely to be forgotten in the fashion industry. With TV shows such as Dynasty making such an impact on what people wore in the 1980s, it was no wonder the clothes, the make-up, and the hair styles became so popular.

2000s Fashion

So now we move on to the 2000s Fashion, as you can tell that the 2000s fashion is very different from the 80s fashion and also kind of similar, many clothing trends in the 2000s were born out of globalization, the rise of fast fashion (affordable clothes based off runway designs usually found in department stores like Mervyn’s, J.C. Penney, and Macy’s), and celebrities’ growing influence as style icons. As with all decades, looks and trends varied as the ’00s went on, so if you’re tasked with putting an outfit together, don’t assume your tracksuit straight from 2001 will work for every occasion. The 2000s were also home to trends that hit big and burnt out fast. If you’re going for a particular look, be sure that style is from the right time period before heading to set.

Technology and Y2K had a huge impact on fashion in the early 2000s. The color palette was filled with shiny black tones and reflective metallics. While some Y2K trends were worn daily, many of these looks were reserved for going out. Popular outfits for women included mesh or handkerchief tops, box-pleated or leather skirts, shiny pants, and sparkly shoes. For men, Y2K looks usually involved leather jackets, a statement dress shirt, and chunky shoes. If you need inspiration, Britney Spears and *NSYNC were trendsetters for this type of style.

Casual clothing and leisurewear were the other big trends of the early 2000s. Denim became a staple for men and women, going beyond jeans to shirts, jackets, and hats. If you’re putting together a casual style for women, think crop tops, hoodies, low-rise flared jeans, cargo pants, daisy dukes, jean skirts, off the shoulder tops, ribbed sweaters, with platform sandals, Ugg boots, or sneakers. Common looks for men included, distressed denim, cargo pants, tracksuits, rugby or polo shirts, flip flops, oxford shoes, and sneakers.

Archery

By Ana Ibarra Bernardino :)

Did you know that archery has been around since 10,000 BC? Some might say that the original bow and arrow was found at Sibdu Cave in South Africa, while others may argue that it was found in Germany. Nevertheless, archery has been one of the most important sports, helping with hand-eye coordination, upper body strength, core stability, and balance. It is considered popular with about 24 million people playing competitively.

Archery & The Olympics

Archery was first introduced in the 1900 Paris Exposition. Four years later, the Olympic Games included women for the first and last time in archery. The 1908 and 1920 games also included archery. Unfortunately, due to inconsistent rules and hosts favoring their own country’s athletes, archery was forced out of the Olympic Games in 1920. Viewers would not see archers on the field until 1972. The Olympic Gold medalists were:

Men’s Individual – Mete Gazoz (Turkey)

Men’s Team – Kim Woo-jin, Oh Jin-hyek, Kim Je-deok (South Korea)

Women’s Individual – An San (South Korea)

Women’s Team – An San, Jang Min-hee, Kang Chae-young (South Korea)

Mixed Team – Kim Je-deok, An San (South Korea)

Equipment, Scoring, & Its Objective

An archer must obviously have a bow and a set of arrows. Finger protection, like tape or gloves, may be used. Archers should wear chest protectors, arm guards, and other accessories. The target’s size may vary. Those used in the Olympics measure 122 cm in diameter, but all contain the same feature. The ten rings used in scoring. The two outermost rings (called ring one and ring two) are white, rings three and four are black, five and six are blue, seven and eight are red, and nine and ten – the innermost rings – are gold. The tenth ring also has an inner ring known as “inner 10” or “X ring”.

In competitive archery (involving multiple archers shooting at a target), archers must shoot their arrow as close to the middle of the target as possible. In the Olympics, archers must shoot from a distance of 70 meters.

The Cesar Chavez Parade

By Adelynn Millan

The Cesar Chavez Parade in San Francisco was full of beautiful cars. On April 9th everyone gathered their cars and prepared for the parade. All the cars lined up to celebrate Cesar Chavez and his accomplishments. Just in case you did not know Cesar Chavez led marches, called for boycotts and went on several hunger strikes for farm workers. There were so many beautiful classic cars and bikes in the parade. The Cesar Chavez parade was very beautiful.

While all the cars passed by there was one that caught my eye. A bright yellow 1955 Chevy station wagon was next in line of amazing cars. This car was one of the many to stand out in the line of cars.

Retro Games

By Hussna Kabiri

Everyone is excited for the new games that are coming out, but what about the games that we left behind from years ago? I'm talking all the way back to 2005. Though these games are old, you can still purchase and play them! These are some of my favorite games that can be played on a console or PC. Maybe after reading this article about my top retro games, you'll find your own favorite game.

5. Resident Evil

Resident Evil 5 is a 3rd person shooting game tha was published for Playstaion 3 and Xbox 360 in March of 2009. The game is about an investigation of a terrorist thread by Bioterrorism Security Assement Alliance agents Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar. It takes place in Africa in an unnamed city, Kijuju.

Whenever I think about this game, it reminds me of how much fun I had playing it with my older brother when I was younger. The graphics in this game may not seem as good now, but for it's time, the graphics are really good.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0473298/ if you want to watch the trailer.

This game contains lots of gore and killing which may trigger some people. When I was younger, this game would keep me up at night because of how scary some of the scenes, but that didn't stop me from continuing the game with my brother.

4. Mortal Kombat 9

Mortal Kombat 9 is a fighting game that was developed in 2015. MK9 is a game where two players pick a character and play against each other in a fight whether it be them both in the same room, or random people online. Each character has their own special moves that you use to deal more damage.

I played this game with all of my siblings when I was very young. We used to play against each other but being the youngest sibling, I would never win.

The newest Mortal Kombat that they have created is Mortal Kombat X, which was published in 2019.

When I played this game, I mained Scorpion! Who did you main?

Sadly you can't play this game anymore.

3. Assassins Creed Revelations

I think I've played all the Assassin's Creed games, but the one that truly sticks to me because of the nostalgia, it'd be Assassin's Creed Revelations.

Assassin's creed is an action-adventure game that was released back in 2011.

In the game, the Assassins fight to preserve peace and free will and the Templars desire peace through control. The game follows to struggle of both the Templars desiring peace through control and the Assassins fighting to preserve the peace.

Assassin's Creed is a one-player game.

I love the way this game is and how it's played. It's an enjoyable game that I think many people will like.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1928116/ if you want to watch the trailer.

2. Borderlands 2

Borderlands 2 was the first story game that I had ever finished. I have also played all of the other borderlands games, but I think this is the best one.

Borderlands 2 was released in 2012. The game is set on the planet Pandora. In the game, a group of Vault Hunters must ally with the Crimson Raiders, a resistance group made up of the civillian survibors and guerrilla fighters. They need to ally with them to defeat Handsome Jack before he can unlock the power of a new Vault.

Replaying this game brings me so many memories. When I play the game now, I realize that the graphics are honestly not that bad for now time.

I highly reccommend playing this one through. Who knows? This might be your new favorite game.

https://borderlands.fandom.com/wiki/Borderlands_2 if you want to watch the trailer.

1. Fallout 3

Fallout 3 is a game that was released in 2008. The game is set during a post-apocalypty, open word environment. The world consists of the ruins of Washington, D.C., and much of the countryside to the north and west of it which is referred to as the Capital Wasteland.

The beginning of the game starts off with you being born and slowly growing old until one day, your father goes missing and everything goes wrong. You leave the vault which nobody besides your father has left in years. You are set to look for your father and then eventually, you find yourself seeking to complete you fathers work and dream of fighting to give the entire world clean water. The water is all filled with radiation poisining.

This game will forever be my favorite game because of how much I enjoyed playing it when I was younger. This is also a one player story game.

I highly reccommend playing this one through as well. The story is amazing.

Electric Cars Save the Environment

By Xander Duong

Are electric cars the new generations of cars?

Electric cars are a new generation of cars, no more fossil fuel cars. Stop using gas and use electric-powered cars. Well in Irvine’s Great Park in Irvine, CA on October 13th, 2021, there is all kinds of brands of new electric cars worldwide all at one place. People should start buying electric cars and show it benefits us and the environment. Companies such as Tesla, BMW, and Nissan sell electric cars. Electric cars are important to the environment and the climate, so buy one!

What is behind an electric car? Well, an electric car has an uncomplicated design. Electric cars have batteries, a control system, and electric motor. The batteries recharge from a wall or a charging station. All the energy stored can be release from the batteries into the controller when you press down the accelerator pedal. The electric motor is connected to the wheels. Fun fact, the electric motor can function as a generator for the car when coasting downhill.

A Tesla is different from a basic electric car design. Tesla has 100% electric power. It does not use any liquid or solid fuel. This means no pollution! A Tesla has regular wheels and regular production tires. Also, other common auto parts. The hood has storage so you can use it for personal use. What makes a tesla different from other electric car is it does not have one big battery like others. They have tons of lithium batteries. High quality and efficient!

DRMS Soccer

By Francis Tandaan

Did you know that the DRMS soccer season has

started? Well, it has! The Boys and Girls DRMS soccer team play against other schools such as Black Diamond and Orchard Park, on Thursdays at James Donlon Park. The Boys’ soccer team practice every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday while the girls’ soccer team practices every Monday and Tuesday. There are 2 coaches that teach the DRMS soccer teams: Coach Conrad and Coach Brinkman. If you want more information here is some of the latest news for the school’s soccer season.

The first couple games of the season are to determine which teams should make it to the play-offs. The play-offs is the final tournament that decides on which team wins the whole soccer season. The soccer season for DRMS started strong. Both boys’ and girl’s first game were against Black Diamond Middle School and ended up having a tie. During these events, the boys’ soccer team tragically lost against Antioch Middle school, Orchard Park Middle School, and Park Middle School. On the contrary, the girls’ soccer team ended up winning against Antioch Middle School and Orchard Park Middle School but lost against Park Middle School and tied against Black Diamond Middle School. Unfortunately, the boys’ soccer team practiced hard, but eventually ended up ranking last place. The girls’ soccer team however, ranked second and therefore making it to the play-offs. Either way, both teams tried their best and gave it their all!

World cup

by Erick De la o

Where else have you seen countries around the world compete against each other. The world cup is the place to go see. It starts on Monday November 2 and there are 32 teams that qualifies in the world cup. I personally don’t watch soccer but I’m definitely seeing this one. Eight stadiums will host the event across five cities in Qatar: Lusall, Al Khor, Al Rayyan, Al Wakrah and Doha. And for most people soccer is what helps people have food on the table for there families.

The team which finishes fourth in the tournament will receive $25 million, while the team finishing third will receive $27 million. The runners-up will receive $30 million while the winner of the FIFA World Cup 2022 will receive $42 million. I cannot imagine what I would do with that much money. If you are planning to go the cost of the tickets for group matches ranged from $105 to $210, while tickets for the final ranged in price from $455 to $1,100. So go see your favorite soccer players play against each other to see who truly is the best.
