History, education, and communication are Dr. Doherty's areas of expertise. She has taught at several institutions including the Swiss Business School, the Basel School of Business, Illinois State University, Fordham University, UMass Lowell, Merrimack College, NYU, Hofstra University, and Nassau Community College. She has taught students of all ages and all abilities, including those for whom English is not their first or primary language. She received her Ph.D. in History from New York University and her B.A. in American Studies and Women's Studies from Fordham University, Bronx, NY. She is multilingual and has dyslexia.

Linguistics, cognitive neuroscience, bilingualism, language acquisition, language disorders, and TEFL are specialties of Prof. Fukuda. She has published numerous articles, book chapters, and language assessment tests. She is a tenured, Full Professor of English and Linguistics in the Faculty of Law at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo, Japan. She attended McGill University in Montreal, Canada. for her graduate education and the University of Vermont as an undergraduate. She speaks fluent English, Japanese, and French.
