This module focused on digital citizenship, particularly the resources from Common Sense media. The resources were incredibly helpful in helping to empower educators to understand how to use technology in safe way in the digital environment.
To create this infographic, I used a pro Canva account. This enabled me to use the paid graphics for the infographic. I appreciate that Canva now allows for teachers to use their pro version once they have been confirmed as a classroom teacher.
As an elementary school principal, the topic of bullying was a challenge because of the high level of confusion about the differing levels of conflict. Much of the time, I would get complaints of bullying and in reality, it was either conflict or mean moments. Since 2011, I had used variations of this information from teasing to bullying. I chose one website to reference, but it is very difficult to find the original source to cite because of how many ways it has been used by schools and counselors. I did add the cyberbullying information from the government website because their definition seemed clear to elementary students. The last item I added was about what to do. When I worked with students about reporting concerns, this is what I would tell students to do.
Ultimately, I would use this infographic during the initial PBIS assemblies that I do with students at the beginning and middle of the year to explain conflict. I would send it home for parents as part of our PBIS handbook and as I worked with students, I would reference it with them.
This week was a bit more challenging for me because of the technology challenges I experienced in using Flipgrid to record my answer. The questions that are posed for the discussion board are nuanced and require time to answer. I found that I was not able to stay within the two minutes to give a complete answer. My thoughts are that Flipgrid seems to be a tool better matched to a more organic type of question that is not high stakes for grades. As a meticulous learner, there was a mismatch on my use of it.
The idea that resonated with me was about "creating experiences for learners to make positive, socially responsible contributions and exhibit empathetic behavior online that build relationships and community." During the last module, I made sure to use learning experiences that would help students to develop empathy about voting based on Teaching Tolerance resources. Therefore, creating opportunities for students to become more empathetic and kind is critical to civil participation.
The creation of the infographic for defining types of conflict is about helping students to clarify their understandings about the differences between the levels. In my previous experience, the confusion about bullying was high so using a third point as a reference helps to diffuse the emotional feelings that students and families might have when they have been involved in a conflict.
In this module, I continued to develop my skills in Domain 4, Competency 4: Instructional Tools, Standard A: Use learning management system and/or other online collaborative tools to organize and manage the blended learning environment. This was my first time to use Flipgrid and it is definitely out of comfort zone of leaving a video of my recorded responses.
