Research Experiences

Additional Professor, Dept. of Neurophysiology (May 2017 on wards)

  1. Physiology of Brain stimulation in Neurological and Psychiatric disorders
  2. Cardiac Autonomic functions in neurological and psychiatric disorders
  3. Integrating Indian Systems of Medicine (Yoga, Ayurveda and Naturopathy) with Evidence Based Medicine

Scientific Associate, Research Analyst & Post-Doc Research Fellow, U of Toronto (2007-17)

My research works mainly involved in understanding the basal ganglia and motor cortical circuits in the pathophysiology of Movement Disorders especially using deep brain stimulation and transcranial magnetic stimulation. I worked as research fellow at Dr. Chen's Neurophysiology lab at Toronto Western Hospital, U of T. I was involved in various projects to find answers for neuronal networks and plasticity in the human motor cortex in healthy as well as patients with movement disorders. These findings could enable understanding of pathophysiology thereby finding better tools to manage these movement disorders. My other responsibilities include research in other neurological (epilepsy, stroke) and psychiatric disorders (mood disorders), Neuroscience teaching and lab administration.

Senior Research Fellow, Dept. of Neurophysiology, NIMHANS (2005-07)

  • Worked in project titled “Autonomic function tests in patients with depression – Role of Ayurvedic therapy and transcranial magnetic stimulation” funded by Central Council of Research in Ayurveda & Siddha (CCRAS).
  • Performed clinical investigations (autonomic function tests and pulmonary function tests) on patients with neurological and psychiatric disorders
  • Trained in various neurophysiologic techniques like stereotaxic lesioning, morphological and behavioral studies on experimental animals

Resident of Physiology, JIPMER Pondicherry (2000-04)

  • Conducted research in the fields of yoga, cardio-respiratory and exercise physiology in human subjects
  • Conducted neurophysiologic studies in rats on feeding behaviors
  • Guided medical students in carrying out Indian Council of Medical Research studies
  • Taught Physiology to under-graduate, graduate and medical students
