Dr. James McInnis

Doctor of Medicine

Dr. James McInnis, Lt. (N), MD, CCFP, has dedicated over a decade to specializing in emergency and trauma medicine and has spent sixteen years as a family physician. Beyond his professional endeavors, he is a devoted father of four, an accomplished athlete, a lieutenant (N) in the Canadian Armed Forces, a Navy reservist, and an active volunteer.

The Early Years

Originally from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, and the eldest of four siblings, he has always been an avid sports enthusiast. From a young age, he engaged in hockey, baseball, tennis, and golf, excelling in hockey and baseball at competitive levels. The Boston Red Sox even scouted him for his pitching skills. As an adult, he incorporated weightlifting into his fitness regimen.

His formidable work ethic took root early, evidenced by his managing a paper route at ten and starting his first full-time job at McDonald's by thirteen.

Education, Professional Licensure, and Certifications

He completed his BBA in 1992 at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and after traveling across the United States, he pursued further studies. In 1997, he earned a BSc (Honors) in Biochemistry and Genetics from Dalhousie University. He later received his Epidemiology Certification from the same institution, followed by a Doctor of Medicine degree in 2004 after entering Dalhousie Medical School in 2000. His postgraduate training in Emergency and Family Medicine was completed at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

He holds several critical medical licenses and certifications, including the MCC (Licensure of Medical Council of Canada), a Commissioned Rank as Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy, CCFP (Canadian College of Family Physicians), and a promotion to Lieutenant (N) in the Royal Canadian Navy.

Honors and Awards

Over the years, Dr. James McInnis has been awarded numerous accolades, including the Prince Edward Island Top Medical Student Scholarship, the Burke Certificate for Promise in Family Medicine, a Special Citation for Meritorious Service in the Canadian Armed Forces, and several academic recognitions related to his research and presentations.

Academic Experience

He has held several academic roles, such as Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Laboratory Studies at Dalhousie University, Senior Post Graduate Clinical Instructor at McMaster University, and Senior Professor and Evaluator at the Canadian Forces School of Physician Assistants in CFB Borden, Ontario.

Serving His Country

For nine years, he served as a Lieutenant (N) in the Canadian Armed Forces and continues as an active Class B reservist for the Royal Canadian Navy. His military service includes roles as a medical officer, a deployed member of the Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART), and various consultancy positions.

Clinical Experience and Medical Practice

After working as an Emergency Physician at McMaster University Hospital, he moved to the Wasaga/Angus Community Health Center as the Director of Care. In 2010, he joined the Medical Division of the Canadian Armed Forces as a Class B reservist.

Volunteer Work

He has a long history of volunteerism, including providing medical care at shelters in Halifax and continuing similar work in Hamilton and Toronto. He also supported programs aiding individuals leaving the sex trade and tutored children in group homes.

A Family Man, A Man of Faith

A father of three daughters and one son, Dr. James McInnis treasures time spent with his family, participating in outdoor activities, and sharing his love for sports. His involvement extends to coaching minor hockey and volunteering in various other capacities related to his children's activities.

He is a practicing Christian and regularly attends Mapleview Christian Church with his children.
