At Drift (“we”, “our”, or “us”), we are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how our mobile application handles user information and notification data. Drift is designed around privacy-first, on-device processing. Notification content is processed locally and transiently to display ambient notification tickers and overlays. We do not collect, store, or transmit your notification content or personal information to external servers.
Drift processes notification content and application configuration locally on your Android device.
No External Servers: Drift does not operate servers that collect or store your notification content or personal information.
No Data Sharing: We do not sell, rent, monetize, or share your notification content or personal data with third parties.
No Network Harvesting: Drift does not use network connectivity to upload, monitor, or harvest your notifications, notification text, or device activity.
Transient Notification Processing: Notification content is held only in volatile memory while it is being processed and displayed. It is not written to persistent storage, logged, or retained after it is no longer needed.
Local Configuration: Your Drift preferences, style customizations, and app filter configurations are stored locally on your device.
Drift requires access to certain Android system capabilities to function as an ambient notification and heads-up replacement. Each capability is used only for the functionality described below.
A. Notification Listener Service (BIND_NOTIFICATION_LISTENER_SERVICE)
Purpose: Allows Drift to receive notifications from other applications so they can be rendered as ambient notification tickers, cards, and other configured visual presentations.
Data Handling:
Notification information such as the originating application, title, text, icon, notification key, timestamp, and available notification actions may be received by Drift.
Notification data is normalized into an internal notification model and processed entirely on-device.
Notification content is kept only in volatile memory while it is being processed, queued, or displayed.
Notification content is never intentionally written to persistent storage, logged, uploaded, or transmitted to external servers.
When notification data is no longer required, it is discarded from memory.
B. System Overlay (SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW)
Purpose: Allows Drift to display its ambient notification ticker and notification cards over other applications.
Data Handling:
Overlay windows are created and controlled locally by Drift.
Notification content displayed by the overlay originates from the locally processed notification data.
Overlay interaction data is used only to provide the configured notification experience and execute user-requested notification actions.
Drift does not capture, record, or transmit the general contents of other applications displayed underneath its overlays.
C. Usage Access (PACKAGE_USAGE_STATS)
Purpose: Powers the optional "Quiet Apps" feature, allowing Drift to detect if a user-designated application (such as games, camera, or full-screen video apps) is currently active in the foreground, suppressing ambient overlays to avoid unwanted interruptions.
Data Handling:
Active foreground app status is evaluated transiently on-device using Android's UsageStatsManager.
Drift does not track, record, or profile your application usage history, nor does it transmit usage statistics off your device.
D. Post Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS)
Purpose: On supported Android versions (Android 13+), this permission allows Drift to display its own persistent system notification required by Android for background notification-processing durability and local status information.
Data Handling:
Drift-generated notifications are created locally by the application.
Notification permission information is not uploaded or shared with external services.
Drift does not use this permission to collect notifications from other applications. Notification access is provided separately through Android's Notification Listener Service.
E. Notification Actions and Inline Replies
Purpose: Drift may expose actions provided by the original notification, including notification buttons and supported inline reply functionality.
Data Handling:
When you explicitly interact with a notification action, Drift invokes the corresponding Android notification action locally.
For supported inline replies, text entered by you is passed directly to the originating notification through Android's notification APIs.
Drift does not independently store, log, or transmit your reply text to any servers.
Drift only processes such information as necessary to execute the action you explicitly requested.
F. Installed Application Information & Recent App Cache
Purpose: Drift allows you to configure per-app style overrides and quiet app filters.
Data Handling:
To facilitate per-app customization without scanning full system inventories, Drift locally caches the package name and app label of apps that post notifications.
This information is stored strictly in local device preferences and is never uploaded, sold, shared with third parties, or used to build user profiles.
G. Local Application Configuration
Purpose: Drift stores your preferences, notification filters, appearance settings, ticker behavior, and other application configuration required to remember your choices.
Data Handling:
Configuration data is stored locally on your Android device in private app storage.
Configuration is not transmitted to external servers.
Uninstalling Drift removes its locally stored application data according to Android's standard application data management.
Because Drift is specifically designed to replace or supplement the standard Android heads-up notification experience, it necessarily receives notification information when you grant Notification Access.
This may include potentially sensitive information contained within notifications, such as messages, names, email previews, authentication codes, financial notifications, or other private content.
Drift processes this information locally and transiently for the sole purpose of providing its notification experience.
Drift does not:
Upload notification content to any servers.
Store notification content in a database or cloud service.
Sell or share notification content with third parties.
Build advertising or marketing profiles from notification content.
Use notification content for analytics or advertising.
Log notification text for debugging or telemetry.
Built-In Content Privacy:
Drift includes an optional "Hide Content" setting that redacts notification message bodies on the ambient display, showing only the originating application and title for enhanced privacy in public spaces. Notification information is immediately discarded when it is no longer required by the rendering pipeline.
Drift does not use third-party analytics SDKs, advertising networks, or cloud tracking services.
Network Access (android.permission.INTERNET): Used strictly for communicating with Google Play services to manage in-app purchases and handle user-initiated actions (such as opening the app's Google Play Store listing or redemption pages). Drift never transmits notification data over the internet.
In-App Purchases: Drift offers optional premium features through in-app purchases. All purchase transactions, payment processing, and license entitlements are handled directly by Google Play In-App Billing (Google LLC). Drift does not collect, receive, or store your credit card numbers, payment details, or billing addresses.
Because Drift does not maintain user accounts or cloud storage, no personal data or notification content exists on external servers.
Deleting Your Data: You can instantly and permanently purge all locally stored settings, custom style presets, and cached app identifiers at any time by navigating to Android Settings > Apps > Drift > Storage & Cache and selecting Clear Storage / Clear Data, or by uninstalling the application.
Drift is not directed specifically to children under the age of 13. Because Drift does not collect personal information or transmit notification content to external servers, we do not knowingly solicit or store personal information from children.
Drift is designed to minimize data exposure by design. Notification content is processed in volatile memory and is never intentionally persisted. The application does not maintain a remote database containing notification history or user profiles. However, no software can guarantee absolute security. The security of your device, Android installation, and other applications on your device also contributes to the overall security of information displayed on your device.
You remain in complete control of Drift's access to your notifications and system features:
You can revoke Drift's Notification Access at any time through Android system settings (Settings > Apps > Special App Access > Notification Access).
You can revoke Usage Access, Display Over Other Apps, or notification permissions through Android's system permission settings.
Disabling Notification Access will immediately prevent Drift from receiving and rendering notifications from other applications.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes to Drift, Android platform requirements, or our privacy practices. Any updates will be published within the application and on the applicable store listing or privacy policy page. We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically for changes.
