My 7 yr. old, Dream, stopped me one day on my way to a meeting and said “Dad, I want to make me a shirt”. I told him, sure, think about what you want on it and I’ll get it made for you to wear. He then said, “No, I want to create a shirt to sell”. He completely floored me!! My 7 yr. old wanted his own business... (Proud Dad Moment). I suggested he designed his shirt and we’d talk about it later. When I made it home, I could not believe what I saw. He’d designed a shirt that read STOP BULLYING.
After I sat him down and asked all of the dad questions like, “Are you OK?”, “Is anyone bothering you?”, etc., he reminded me of a video I’d shown him a couple of weeks back and said it made him pay more attention to what was going on around him at school. He wasn’t the BULLY or the BULLIED... he was simply upset and negatively affected by watching others be bullied. He wanted to help but did not know how so he thought that if he sold shirts that said STOP BULLYING people could be reminded that it was bad and make people talk about it more.
I talked to him about partnering with a nonprofit organization that dealt with bullying and planning an event, program or initiative to engage kids around anti-bullying and reinforced kindness, playing and making friends. HE LOVED IT!
This is his shirt. A portion of the proceeds from each sale will support the programs and change that he’d like to see take place.
You can track his progress in his anti-bullying campaign by liking the Dream In Color Clothing Page. We'll also be posting a lot of great information for parents, educators and youth.
