Some cultures have crafted objects to help control the effects of dreams. Such was the case with the Ojibwa tribe from the upper Midwest. Since the dream was believed to play an important part in one's life, the Ojibwa fashioned hoops called "dream catchers" resembling spiders webs, as the spider is believed to be the keeper of dreams. The web allows the good dreams to pass through to the dreamer while bad dreams are trapped within the web. Charms are woven into the web, to reinforce the dreams. The Pawnee have similar practices.
The song "Dream Catcher" is an original accompanied round composed using a mode similar to those used by Native American tribes of the Great Plains. For the recording, you will hear a wooden flute, piano, frame drum, and natural jingles accompanying the voices. This song was a breakthrough in my writing because it introduces a new perspective of hope and positivity. When we write about heartbreak we get to let it out and share the pain of the experience. I love writing songs about that. But I also love writing songs that tell a story and a positive hope for the future.
When I first came to Nashville I was an indie pop kid. Inspired by artists like Sylvan Esso and Marina and the Diamonds, I wanted to bring that to Nashville. But then my day job became country music and I fell in love with the genre. So now with a loyalty to the country music style of writing that reflects truth, I create pop. Yes Jan Buckingham and John Willis whom i mentioned previously were my two big collaborators on this project for the writing and production. I also had Savannah Wilde help me create the visual aesthetic for this release which can be seen in my release photos. I told her I wanted the shoot to reflect dreams, glamor, and city life looking toward a bright future with the Dreamcatcher in my hand. She did a great job capturing that.

Maybe I should consider getting myself a dream catcher. As one of the most fascinating traditions of the Native Americans, the intention of a dream catcher is to protect a sleeping individual from negative dreams, while allowing the positive dreams to go through. The positive dreams would slip through the hole in the middle of the dream catcher and glide down the feathers to the sleeping person below. The negative dreams will get caught up in the web and expire when the first rays of the sun strike them.
The dream catcher has been a part of the Native American culture and tradition for generations. An element of the Native American dream catcher relates to the tradition of the hoop. To some Native Americans of North America, the hoop is held in the highest esteem because it symbolizes strength and unity. Many symbols started around the hoop, and one of these symbols is the dream catcher.
The idea of the dream catcher caught on because the Native Americans believed that the night air is filled with dreams, both good and bad. With the dream catcher hanging over your bed or swinging freely in the air near your head, it catches your dreams as they flow by. The good dreams know how to pass through the dream catcher, slipping through the outer holes and sliding down the soft feathers ever so gently that many times, the sleeping individual does not know that he or she is dreaming. The bad dreams, however, would not know the way and end up tangled in the dream catcher, before perishing at dawn with the first light of the new day.
The inspiration for Dream Catcher has come to me almost as a message from above. I was making dream catchers for a festival that I was playing a few years ago and got a moment of inspiration when I knew I needed to take the experience of going out and catching my dreams at whatever cost and put it into a song. Another fun fact about the inspiration for the bridge of the song was that I was meditating one morning and all of a sudden the words were flowing through my thoughts, so I opened my eyes, grabbed a pen and paper, and started writing down what was coming to me. It makes me believe that this song is ultimately for a higher purpose and being.
Yes! Right away, I knew that Dream Catcher needed to be written with Andrew Beason, one of my best friends in Nashville. Andrew has a fabulous way of writing that brings truth and sincerity without sounding cheesy. We had a blast writing it! The recording process was so much fun as well. My producer in Nashville, Simon Gugala, is amazing and has fully encouraged my love for producing in the studio, so he brought me in to co-produce this track. It has been such an incredible learning experience from the beginning!
We have been so excited to share the video! I have been drawn to the Arizona desert for all my life, so it was a dream to be able to work out there! The magic of the desert brought this whole concept to life. The idea with the video is that I have spent my whole life being drawn to Arizona and the viewers get to witness me catching a dream right in the video. The happiness that beams from me is genuine and authentic!
