If you want a hitch capable of handling heavier towing loads for your Toyota Tacoma, choose Draw-Tite 75236; if you need a slightly lighter, more compact solution specifically engineered for a Subaru Forester, choose REESE Towpower 44705.
These two Class 3 hitches represent the pinnacle of custom-fit engineering from their respective brands, yet they serve different masters and different vehicles. The decision between them isn't about which brand is "better" in a vacuum; it is entirely about whether you are driving a mid-size truck or a compact crossover. One is built to push the limits of capacity, while the other is optimized for fitment within tighter chassis constraints. Understanding these fundamental differences is the only way to make a safe choice that aligns with your specific vehicle's capabilities.
• Best For Truck Owners: If you own a Toyota Tacoma (2005-2015) and plan to tow boats, campers, or utility trailers regularly, the higher capacity of the Draw-Tite is non-negotiable.
• Best For Crossover Owners: If you drive a Subaru Forester (2014-2018) and need a reliable hitch for light utility trailers or bike racks, the REESE unit fits perfectly without over-specifying the hardware.
• Design Philosophy: Both utilize solid, all-welded steel and rigorous testing standards, but the Draw-Tite leans into raw durability for trucks, while the REESE focuses on precise geometry for SUVs.
• The Trade-off: Choosing the wrong one means either risking structural overload by going under-capacity on a truck or wasting money on a unit too large for a smaller vehicle platform.
The Draw-Tite 75236 is not just a piece of metal bolted to a frame; it is a purpose-built interface designed exclusively for the 2005 through 2015 Toyota Tacoma, excluding the X-Runner models. When I look at the specifications, what stands out immediately is the commitment to a custom fit that mirrors the manufacturer's original engineering. This isn't a universal adapter trying to force itself onto a chassis; it is crafted to sit flush against the frame rails of the Tacoma, ensuring that the stress distribution happens exactly where the vehicle was designed to handle it. For an ATV owner who needs to haul gear, the 2-inch receiver opening provides a standardized platform that accepts a wide array of accessories, from cargo carriers to bike racks, without any wobble or play.
The most critical factor here is the weight capacity. The construction relies on solid, all-welded steel, a detail that cannot be overstated when discussing safety. Every weld is subjected to rigorous fatigue and stress testing to ensure the unit can withstand road abuse, potholes, and the constant vibration of highway driving. This level of testing ensures that the hitch meets and exceeds V-5 and SAE J684 standards, giving you confidence that the connection point won't fail under pressure.

However, this strength comes with a physical presence. Additionally, the finish is a two-part black powder coat designed to resist rust and corrosion, which is vital for anyone living in areas with harsh winters or salty roads. While the protection is excellent, the sheer size and weight mean this is a product for those who prioritize towing capability above all else. If you rarely tow more than a small utility cart, this unit might be overkill, but if you have a Tacoma and intend to use it as a true workhorse, this is the hardware you need.
The REESE Towpower 44705 tells a different story, one centered on precision and integration for the 2014 through 2018 Subaru Forester. Like its counterpart, it is custom-built according to manufacturer specifications to ensure a perfect fit, meaning the installation process is streamlined and the final result looks as though it came from the factory floor. The inclusion of a hitch plug cover right out of the box is a thoughtful touch that speaks to the brand's attention to detail regarding aesthetics and protection. For the owner of a Subaru Forester, space and clearance are often concerns, and the dimensions of this unit—10.5 x 37.5 x 14.5 inches—are designed to navigate the unique contours of the crossover's rear end without interfering with ground clearance or rear hatch operation.
for Tongue Weight. While this is lower than the Draw-Tite model, it is perfectly adequate for the typical needs of a compact SUV owner. You can safely tow a small utility trailer, a single-axle boat, or a motorcycle carrier. The tongue weight capacity is actually slightly higher than the Draw-Tite's standard rating, offering a bit more leverage for loading heavy items onto the hitch ball, which is a clever engineering trade-off. The construction mirrors the industry standard for safety: solid, all-welded steel that undergoes rigorous fatigue and stress testing to meet V-5 and SAE J684 standards. This ensures that even though the unit is rated for less weight, it is built with the same ruggedness and reliability expected of a premium towing accessory.
For a vehicle like the Forester, which has a lower payload capacity than a full-sized truck, shedding four pounds of hardware can make a noticeable difference in how the rear suspension behaves when the vehicle is empty. The two-part black powder coat finish provides the same high level of resistance against rust and corrosion, ensuring longevity regardless of weather conditions. This hitch is particularly well-suited for the recreational user who wants to carry bikes, skis, or a small camper but doesn't need to haul massive loads. It is the go-to choice for the Subaru owner who values a clean, integrated look and reliable performance for weekend adventures rather than daily heavy-duty hauling. The design prioritizes fitment and ease of use, making it a smart selection for those who want a hitch that works seamlessly with their lifestyle without dominating the rear of their vehicle.
• Best for Lighter Vehicle Platforms → REESE Towpower 44705: The 33-pound weight and specific dimensions are better suited for the payload limits of a Subaru Forester.
• Best for Fitment Specificity → Both: Both units are custom-designed for their specific vehicle applications (Tacoma vs. Forester), ensuring no interference with body panels.
• Best for Durability Perception → Both: Both rely on solid, all-welded steel and exceed V-5 and SAE J684 standards, so neither compromises on build quality.
• Best for ATV Owners with Trucks → Draw-Tite 75236: If you are using a Tacoma to haul ATVs or heavy gear, the extra capacity is essential for safety.
• Best for SUV Adventure → REESE Towpower 44705: Ideal for the Subaru owner who needs a reliable hitch for light camping or sporting equipment without needing truck-level specs.
After analyzing the specifications, materials, and intended applications, I would buy the Draw-Tite 75236 if my primary vehicle were a Toyota Tacoma. However, if I were driving a Subaru Forester, the REESE Towpower 44705 would be my undeniable choice because it is the only unit designed to fit that chassis properly. In short, for an ATV owner with a Tacoma, the Draw-Tite is the superior investment due to its higher load ratings and robust construction. Always verify your specific vehicle requirements before purchasing, as using the wrong hitch can lead to unsafe operating conditions.
While both are custom-fitted for their specific vehicles, installation typically requires lifting the vehicle and bolting into the frame rails; checking the manual for torque specifications is highly recommended.
Both products feature a two-part black powder coat finish designed to resist rust and corrosion, ensuring long-term durability in various weather conditions.
