Dragon (noun)
drag·on | dra-gən
Hello, and welcome. You have reached the bridge between your world and that of the dragon. These beasts have survived many battles and are as ancient as time itself. There are few in our world who have encountered such great creatures during their existence, and have passed on their wisdom and stories to the future generations, our ancestors. It is a gift to be able to glean a moment into the life of a dragon and those who have encountered them.
It would make sense to view dragons as combatant creatures, in regard to their size, horns, teeth, claws, and hard, scaly skin. In truth, dragons were created to withstand any environment for survival purposes, their whole body designed for protection. There are some varieties that can be found only in certain areas—there are winged dragons live on the highest mountains, and slender dragons that can cut and weave through the deepest waters. Originally, dragons and humans lived together in peace. The serpentine creatures made the perfect guides, messengers, and protectors. It wasn’t until some humans decided to hunt dragons as a sign of power, causing them to lash out or live in seclusion.
The legends of dragons have persisted in our world for centuries. There are stories of these beasts who ravaged ancient cities to avenge their kind, and those of glorified hunters who killed the dragons for sport. However, there are few who recall the tales of dragons who have watched over mankind throughout the ages, these sage creatures protecting our kin. Because dragons outlive humans, they still remember a time of peace, whereas humans can only recall as much knowledge as they’ve preserved, relying on the past generations to educate them. That is why most have forgotten the old ways—without truly knowing, most assume that dragons are myths and monsters. The knowledge of the dragon's good deeds have dwindled over time, and there is little appreciation for the ancient tales. It is in the interest of this book to share the stories of dragons passed.
As mentioned before, the documentation of these creatures are exceedingly rare. Despite this, there are some accounts of dragons that have resurfaced in modern times. Unfortunately, the people of today do not know of an era when the dragons watched over them. To read the legends of the ancient dragons is an honor, one that would be a missed opportunity for those not given the chance to witness these stories. It is time to introduce you to the tales of the draconic heroes brought to life once again.
