This page contains all discussion posts for IDT 7914. Discussions are posted weekly and are a required part of online courses.
Moderators are assigned to prompt additional responses from peers.
My personal responses are shared on my blog. This was a small class with inactive (non-ITD) students, and professional dialogue was challenging this semester since I had no peers who understood the content.
Course Improvement Suggestions:
Professors should have due dates on discussion posts to help keep workload organized (these posts did not have due dates)
Select the option to post first before viewing discussion posts to maintain academic integrity and encourage academic honesty.
In week 1, I asked you to familiarize yourself with the ISTE Standards for Educators and for Students (http://www.iste.org/standards/iste-standards
). Smaldino et al. reference these standards often in the text (although the book references an outdated version of them). We will spend a great deal of time this semester diving deep into both the Educator Standards and the Student Standards. In this discussion, I would like you to do a comparative analysis between the Educator and Student standards. Look for similarities between the two and then look for areas where the two sets of standards possibly diverge.
Consider the following questions in your analysis:
What is your experience with the ISTE standards up until now?
Which of the Educator Standards would your colleagues most likely use to describe you?
Which of the Student Standards do you most value when are planning your students' learning?
Are there any standards/indicators in the ISTE standards that seem foreign to you? Which ones? Why?
As an educator, which ISTE Educator and Student standards seem the easiest to incorporate into your content curricula? Which seem like they might be the most difficult?
Where are the overlaps in these two sets of standards? Where does one set of standards seem to support the other? Be specific.
Finally, On pp. 24-25 of Smaldino et al. they discuss principles of effective instruction (8 bullet points). What similarities/parallels can you make between these 8 bullet points and the 7 ISTE Educator Standards? Be specific in your replies using both the ISTE Educator standards and indicators and the 8 points in Smaldino et al. in your response.
Please use APA formatting:

Based on the readings this week, how do the definitions of instructional technology offered here compare with your own personal definition or understanding of the field? What’s similar? What’s different? Anything surprising? How do these definitions compare with your perceptions of what the popular (layman’s) definition or understanding of the field would be?
Please use APA formatting:
500-700 words
Include at least three references in your reply that support your beliefs
Include a reference section at the end of your reply
Use proper headings (Level 1,2, 3, etc. - bold, indentations, etc.)
Based on the readings this week, how does the introduction of connectivism as a learning theory mesh with the existing, and more traditional, learning theories you employ? How might connectivism be beneficial to you as an educator? In your opinion, is connectivism a learning theory that is most applicable to teacher professional learning or student learning (think outside of your immediate teaching assignment)?

Based on the readings this week, how does the idea of digital natives/digital immigrants resonate with you?
What observations do you have of your students that support the digital native argument?
What observations of your students do you have that refute the digital natives argument?
Imagine you are in a school board meeting and someone is using the digital natives construct to justify increased spending in a school's technology budget, namely to purchase additional devices for a school/district. As a part of the school board, how would you address this individual's notion that the digital native idea supports increased technology funding?
Finally, after digging into the topic of digital natives this week, has your idea changed on this subject? If so, why/why not?
Please use APA formatting:
500-750 words max
Include at least three references in your reply that support your beliefs from the provided list of resources
Include one reference to a peer-reviewed journal article on the topic of digital natives that you located and read on your own.
Include a reference section at the end of your reply
Use proper headings (Level 1,2, 3, etc. - bold, indentations, etc.)
Based on the readings this week, How does Clark's argument that media is merely a vehicle but does not influence learning by itself resonate with you?
"The best current evidence is that media are mere vehicles that deliver instruction but do not influence student achievement any more than the truck that delivers our groceries causes changes in our nutrition. Basically, the choice of vehicle might influence the cost or extent of distributing instruction, but only the content of the vehicle can influence achievement." (Clark, 1983)
Compare Clark's position with the results of Hattie's visible thinking. What stands out to you when comparing these two researchers' take on media and technology?
What implications do Clark's meta-analysis and Hattie's analysis have for your instruction? For your use of media/technology in teaching?

After learning about the different frameworks, which one seems the most accessible to begin (or continue) using in your practice? If currently using one of these frameworks, please describe how you use these to guide your planning/use of technology in instruction.
Why would the use of technology frameworks be useful to incorporate into your planning of instruction? Please do not tell me what you think I want to hear. Be honest here. If you are struggling to see the importance of frameworks, please tell me that but substantiate your answer with the "WHY".
What would be the biggest challenges in using these frameworks in integrating technology into your current job?

This week we will look to apply our learning of the SAMR framework to a couple of different teaching scenarios in order for you to begin to apply SAMR as a lense to reflect (and hopefully planning too!) on your current integration of technology into learning.
Below, you will see 4 different scenarios. For each scenario choose which domain(s) of SAMR the scenario that you believe the scenario satisfies. You MUST justify your answer! The most important part of your response is to show your thinking and justify your answer!!
This week you will respond using video-not text. Use this button in the menu bar of your discussion response to record your answers. Make one video that includes your responses to the four scenarios. Please be clear in your video by stating the scenario number followed by your response of which domain it falls into. Continue on with the next scenario, your justification, and so on until you have covered all four scenarios in your responses.
I have made the responses of others invisible this week until you post your own as I want you're thinking around the SAMR scenarios to be your own and not influenced by others.
NOTE: It can take a while for your recording to process in Canvas. Don't be alarmed. Use this as a time to take a break and get up from your computer.
The scenarios:
Scenario #1
Scenario #2
Scenario #3
Scenario #4
Address the following questions in your discussion response.
Where or how have you used UDL thinking or methodologies — or observed its use by someone else — prior to your introduction in this module?
5b.Design authentic learning activities that align with content area standards and use digital tools and resources to maximize active deep learning. UDL Principle of Representation
7a. Provide alternative ways for students to demonstrate competency and reflect on their learning using technology. UDL Principles of Expression and Engagement
How have you used technology to support the learning needs of different students?
5a.Use technology to create, adapt and personalize learning experiences that foster independent learning and accommodate learner differences and needs.
Integrating Digital Citizenship into your practice
Now that you've learned a bit more about digital citizenship and reviewed the activity choice board Links to an external site., it's time to decide on ONE application activity from different categories (digital self, digital interactor, or digital agent) that you could implement in your setting to promote a positive and empowered culture of digital citizenship.
Choose your activity with this in mind: Next week you will work on a plan to actually bring this activity to life in your school!!
Please post a response to the following prompt(s) by Sunday, March 14th, 11:59pm EST.
What activity did you choose for this discussion? Why did you select this activity? (copy and paste activity from the Padlet into your Response)
Briefly explain how your chosen activities meet the four criteria:
Relates to your setting/context
Promotes a positive vision of digital citizenship
Relates to one of the ISTE Standard for Educator indicators
Helps students develop as digital self, digital interactor, or digital agent
What are you hoping to learn through this activity? Or, what result would you hope to achieve if delivering this lesson in your class?

, it's time to decide on ONE application activity from different categories (digital self, digital interactor, or digital agent) that you could implement in your setting to promote a positive and empowered culture of digital citizenship.
Last week in Part 1, you chose your activity from the categories listed, in this discussion (Part 2) describe your plan to actually bring this activity to life in your school (or training environment)!!
Week 13: Include the following in your D10 Part 1 discussion post:
What activity did you choose from last week's discussion (D9?
You will build your lesson plan and prepare a draft lesson in a graphic/video–audio software (e.g., PPT, Prezi, or other presentation software platforms) and choose on your own a review partner to share your presentation with.
You might build your presentation in parallel while you are developing your lesson/unit plan or you can wait for the feedback received from your peer in D10 and your chosen peer review partner and then build your deck.
Note: If you are going to use an existing lesson or unit, please put it in the format of the Unit/Lesson or Professional Learning templates I have shared above.
Please note: Week 13's Discussion 10 (D10) is your submission of your lesson/professional learning plan for your peer reviewer to review. The audio/video-graphic presentation will be submitted during Module 12 (Week 14).
