RESEARCH FOR RESILIENT GEOTECHNICAL INFRASTRUCTURE
RESEARCH FOR RESILIENT GEOTECHNICAL INFRASTRUCTURE
Dr. Sukanta Das is a researcher in the Foundations Group at the Port and Airport Research Institute (PARI), Yokosuka, Japan. Dr. Das specialises in geotechnical earthquake engineering, soil–structure interaction, geohazard assessment, and infrastructure health monitoring.
RESEARCH VISION
To develop mechanics-based and data-informed methods that improve the safety, resilience, and long-term performance of foundations, slopes, and underground infrastructure exposed to earthquakes and other extreme events.
CORE RESEARCH AREAS
Seismic behaviour of slopes and foundations on sloping ground
Dynamic soil–structure interaction and topographic amplification
Structural health monitoring of piles and earth-retaining systems
Fibre-optic sensing, vibration-based diagnostics, and Digital Image Correlation
Land subsidence, landslides, and multi-hazard risk assessment
CURRENT PROGRAMME
Current work combines large-scale physical modelling, advanced sensing, field observations, and three-dimensional finite-element analysis. Ongoing studies include post-installed fibre Bragg grating monitoring of sheet-pile walls and vibration-based damage assessment of hollow steel piles.
ACADEMIC RECOGNITION
Recipient of the ISET D. K. Paul Research Award for Best PhD Thesis in Earthquake Risk Reduction in India (2026).
COLLABORATION
Research collaborations are welcome in geotechnical earthquake engineering, resilient infrastructure, sensing and monitoring, and disaster-risk reduction.
