"No law can be sacred to me but that of my nature. Good and bad are but names very readily transferable to that or this; the only right is what is after my constitution; the only wrong what is against it."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
"Who am I?"
Artists, sages, philosophers and thinkers have been pondering over this moot question since time immemorial. Yet the quest is not over. It is an arduous task to write about one's own self objectively and candidly. Let me just give it a try.
"I am I plus my circumstances." This statement by José Ortega y Gasset would be significant here. A journey of three decades on this planet has made me who I am today. I shall begin with factual details.
I am a Lecturer in English (GES Class II) at R. C. Technical Institute, Ahmedabad. I have cleared GPSC for lecturership in government polytechnic with 2nd rank in Gujarat in 2015.
I have got doctorate degree from the Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University for writing thesis on 'A Comparative Psychological Exploration of Select Short Stories by Edgar Allan Poe, Anton Chekhov and Dr. Jayant Khatri' under the guidance of Prof. Dilip Barad sir (Head, Department of English, MKBU).
I got my M. Phil degree from the Sardar Patel University, Vallabhvidyanagar. My dissertation was on 'A Comparative Study of Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake and Mira Nair's The Namesake'. My supervisor, there, was Dr. R. K. Mandalia sir.
I got medal for the University First Rank in M.A. (English) from MKBU. Fortunately, I worked as a Teaching Assistant at my alma mater - Department of English, MKBU.
I pursued my B.A. (English) from Samaldas Arts College, Bhavnagar.
I have 09 research paper publications and 08 paper presentations to my credit which includes Third Rank in National Paper Reading Competition at Department of English, MSU, Baroda.
Apart from this arranged marriage with English literature, I must confess my lifelong love relationship with Gujarati literature. (Not to mention my extra-marital affair with Hindi and Urdu literature)🤣 Since last one decade, I have been gluttonously reading works of regional writing. Besides, I have tried my hand at creative writing (poems, film/program reviews, journalistic pieces etc). 05 of my articles have been published in Gujarat Samachar - one of the leading Gujarati dailies.
Nothing remarkable can be achieved single-handedly in life. Likewise, there have been myriad people who have held my hand and placed me on the pedestal where I am. My parents, my family, my mentors, my friends, my colleagues..... They have made massive investment in me and I always try not to let them down. Afterall, I can't be an NPA.
Prof. Purnima Mehta, Dr. Sutapa Chaudhary, Prof. Dilip Barad, Prof. Javed Khan, Dr. R. K. Mandalia, Dr. Piyush Joshi........ These are not just names. They (and few others) are the sculptors who have chiselled me. All I can say is:-
"દુનિયામાં કઇંકનો હું કરજદાર છું મરીઝ,
ચૂકવું બધાનું દેણ જો અલ્લાહ ઉધાર દે!"
- મરીઝ
And how about that Allah/God/Lord Hanumanji? Not even in next seven births would I even come closer to think of repaying what Aanjaney has blessed me with.
"अस मैं अधम सखा सुनू मोहू पर रघुबीर
किन्ही कृपा सुमिरि गुण, भरे बिलोचन नैन।"
(A couplet from Sunderkand - 5th Chapter of Shri Ramcharitmanas by Tulsidasji)
Anything about my personality? Well, I am a reasonably narcissistic, highly whimsical and (perhaps) tolerably aggressive man. Creativity is my middlename. In all my academic and literary enterprises, I strive for excellence and iconoclast approach. Poetry and oxygen are synonyms in my life dictionary. I believe that 'A poem a day keeps psychiatrist away'.
As an individual, I have my set of beliefs and opinions but no political affiliation. My thoughts are maverick and taboo-breaking. My individuality is my most priced possession. I never compromise with my academic ethics.
I am a man of sharp sense of humour. (See, how self-dependent I am in praising myself!🤣)
However, as renowned Gujarati humorist Vinod Bhatt says:- "Humour is a dry tear." That is also a case many a times.
Well, enough of this verbal narcissism. I think I should let this E-portfolio speak for me but allow me to describe myself in the words of a beloved Gujarati poet Khalil Dhantejvi:-
"તું ડગ ભરવાની હિંમત કર, ઉતરતા ઢાળ જેવો છું.
મનાવી લે મને હું સાવ નાના બાળ જેવો છું.
દરિયાનાં ઊંડાણો માપવાનું તું સાવ છોડી દે,
મારામાં ઉતર હું સાતમાં પાતાળ જેવો છું."
- ખલિલ ધનતેજવી
Here you will find all my published research papers, poems, blog posts, important social media activities, videos, ppts and so on.
It would be so ungrateful of me if I end this up without acknowledging two personalities:-
Prof. Dilip Barad sir who introduced me to the concept of Digital Portfolio and inspired me to prepare one for me. Like his numerous other acts of academic benevolence, this too shall remain irreceprocable.
Ms. Vaidehi Hariyani who helped me tremendously in developing this E-Portfolio. Such selfless acts are God's ways of saying:- "I'm with you, my boy!"
Tons of thanks to both of them.
And here, My Lord, I rest my case.
Thank you.
