Acquiring a heart disease is common among the world’s population. It is also more likely through aging. But there are various ways to reduce the chances of incurring one, says cardiac electrophysiologist Dr. Ian Weisberg.
It begins with keeping to a healthy weight. Obesity or simply being overweight can increase your risk for heart disease. Weight gain is linked to other risk factors, from diabetes and high cholesterol to high blood pressure. You should find ways to maintain a stable blood pressure by having it checked regularly and making lifestyle changes.
Having a healthy diet in which you limit food high in sugars, sodium, and saturated fats is another way to shoo away heart disease. Go for lots of whole grain, vegetables, and fresh fruits. While improving your diet, make sure to exercise regularly as it not only strengthens your heart but improves circulation and lowers your cholesterol levels. Keep in mind that high levels of cholesterol can increase your chances of a heart attack or coronary artery disease, as cholesterol can clog your arteries.
Lastly, manage your stress levels, as the body tends to cope with it in various ways such as hankering for overeating, heavy alcohol consumption, and smoking. Of course, you must find ways to consciously avoid smoking and limit your alcohol intake, as these are two of the top high-risk factors leading to heart disease, adds Dr. Ian Weisberg.
