During the 2026 Physics Summer Camp, high school students visited the Bio, Nano and Space Materials laboratory. They were able to learn more about aerogels and hold them and learn about phosphor thermometry.
April 2026: Debendra participated in the TTAC (Tennessee Technology Advancement Consortium ) Innovation Fellowship organized by LaunchTN.
April 2026: The collavorative work between Dr. Sabri, Martina, Dr. Raptopoulos, Dr. Paraskevopoulou and Dr. Skalli on the "Customization and tuning of the degradation rate of X–Ca–alginate aerogels in the presence of PC 12 cells" was featured on the back cover of Soft Matter (Issue 11)
March 2026: The collaborative work between Dr. Sabri, Debendra, Dr. Puckett and Dr. Allison was featured by the APS TV. They explained the intricate nature of polar bear hair and how the features of their hair keeps them warm in extremely cold enviroment.
March 2026: Debendra received the Distinguished Student Program Award from the forum on international Physicas at the APS Global Physics Summit.
March 15-20 2026: Dr. Sabri and Debendra attended the APS Global Physics Summit.Debendra presented two presentations titeld: "Enhanced Mechanoluminescence of ZnS:MN at 77K" and "Impact of Polar Bear Hair Microstructure and Young's Modulus on Thermal Properties: A Luminescence Investigation"
Spring 2026: Dr. Patrina Paraskevopoulou, joins us at the laboratory as a Fulbright visiting Scholar.

01/2025: Debendra attended the APS annual leadership meeting 2025 in Washington D.C. where he was invited to attend the meeting as an APS Student Ambassador and participated in the meeting. The APS Annual Leadership Meeting (ALM) brings together APS members and leaders of the scientific community to enhance their skills as volunteers, network, learn from peers, and shape physics' future. As part of the program, Debendra also joined visits to the offices of senators and members of the House of Representatives at Capitol Hill, advocating on behalf of the physics community alongside professors and scientists from Tennessee. They visited the following offices:1. Sen. Marsha Blackburn’s office – Met with Michael Marn, Legislative Assistant2. Sen. Bill Hagerty’s office – Met with J.T. Isaacs, Legislative Aide3. Rep. Tim Burchett’s office (TN-2) – Met with John Stout, Legislative Director4. Rep. Steve Cohen’s office (TN-9) – Met with Rachel Citron, Legislative Correspondent/Legislative Assistant
11/2024: Debendra attended the 2024 Lunar Surface Science Workshop and presented his work titled “Effect of Mars JSC-1 Regolith Particle Diameter and Substrate Surface Potential on Adhesion and Accumulation Behavior of Polymeric and Ceramic Surfaces”
10/2024: Materials Day at the FedEx Institute pf Technology. Both Debendra and Martina presented posters titeld:"Effect of Argon Plasma- Induced Buckling on Coercivity of Permalloy Thin Films on PDMS” and Effect of Argon Plasma- Induced Buckling on Coercivity of Permalloy Thin Films on PDMS”.
Summer 2024: High school students James and Naomi joined the lab for the summer to learn about aerogel and research. They both conducted their own research projects.

08/2024: The Department of Physics and Materials Science hosted the APS CU*IP (American Physical Society Conference for Undergraduate Women and Gender Minorities in Physics. Everyone in the laboratory volunteer during this event and was able to talk and connect with undergraduate students for all over the country.
04/2024 Debendra presented a poster at the Olemiss-MSU-Alabama-Memphis Research Symposium titled “Magnetic Modulation by Ar-Plasma Induced Buckling on Permalloy Thin on PDMS”;
04/2024: Martina presented a poster at the Memphis Neuroscience Symposium titled
" Optimal Structural and Physical Properties of Aerogels for Promoting Robust Neurite Extension in vitro".
04/2024: Debendra became an APS Student Ambassador
04/2024: Debendra recieved the Graduate Student Associateion (GSA) Award, an award that acknowledges student accomplishments, including publications, conference presentations, student leadership, and community service during the 2024 academic year.
