Yuandan Dong has a distinguished background spanning both academia and industry. He earned his B.S. and M.S. in Radio Engineering from Southeast University, Nanjing, China, in 2006 and 2008, respectively, where he worked in Professor Wei Hong’s group. He later received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2012, as a member of Professor Tatsuo Itoh’s group.
From 2008 to 2012, he served as a Graduate Student Researcher in UCLA’s Microwave Electronics Laboratory. Following his doctorate, he joined Qualcomm in San Diego as a Senior Engineer in R&D Hardware (2012–2016) and later worked as a Staff Engineer at Universal Electronics Inc. in Santa Ana (2016–2017). Since December 2017, he has been a Full Professor at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) in Chengdu. His research interests encompass RF and microwave components, antennas, front-end modules, circuits, acoustic-wave filters, and metamaterials.
Dr. Dong’s research contributions are concentrated in two key areas:
Reconfigurable and tunable intelligent antennas, as well as metamaterial-based antennas, contributing significantly to the Antennas and Propagation Society (APS).
Miniaturized RF filters, including acoustic-wave, substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW), integrated-passive-device (IPD), and hybrid filter technologies, advancing the field of Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTTS).
His impactful work has led to the publication of over 360 journal and conference papers, which have garnered more than 9,000 citations. He has been listed as an Elsevier highly cited researcher from 2021 to 2024. Dr. Dong also holds more than 150 patents, including seven international patents. He has supervised many Ph.D. and Master’s students, many of whom have earned IEEE awards (such as APS 22/23/24 Fellowships and 2022 doctoral grants), national scholarships, and conference prizes. He has received several Outstanding Service Awards for Fostering Student Talent.
He is a co-founder of Pinnacle Microwave Inc., a company focused on acoustic-wave filters, RF modules, and intelligent antennas. His team has developed widely deployed RF products, including acoustic wave filters, antenna tuners, and antennas for base stations, mobile devices, and related wireless systems.
Dr. Dong has received several notable awards, including the Best Student Paper Award at the 2010 IEEE Asia Pacific Microwave Conference (APMC) in Yokohama, Japan, and the Best Paper Award at the IEEE International Wireless Symposium (IWS) in 2021 and 2023. He has also been recognized as a Distinguished Expert by Sichuan Province and the national government, and as a High-Level Innovative and Entrepreneurial Talent by Jiangsu Province.
As a Senior Member of IEEE, he serves as one of the TPC Co-chairs for ISAP 2026 and has been a TPC member for several international conferences. Since 2021, he has been an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, where he received an Outstanding Service Award. He has also served as a Guest Editor for the IEEE Open Journal of Antennas and Propagation and is on the editorial board of Electromagnetic Science. Additionally, he reviews for multiple IEEE and IET journals, including the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques and the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. Dr. Dong is a frequent invited speaker on antennas and filters at international conferences and webinars.
