Biography
Augustine Larweh Mahu is a distinguished physicist focusing on quantum physics and gauge/gravity duality. He began his academic journey at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), completing a Master’s in Mathematics, specializing in Quantum Physics and Cosmology, in 2010. During this time, he participated in the Non-Member State Summer Student Programme at CERN, where he worked on detecting W bosons using data from the ATLAS detector, deepening his interest in particle physics.
After completing his master’s thesis, Larweh joined the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS Ghana) in 2012 as a Teaching Assistant at the invitation of the late Prof. Francis K. Allotey. He contributed to establishing the institution’s postgraduate training program during its inaugural year. There, he met Prof. Robert de Mello Koch and pursued a PhD with him in Theoretical Physics at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, focusing on Gauge/Gravity duality. His academic excellence earned him the Postgraduate Merit Award and a bursary from the National Research Foundation.
After earning his PhD in 2018, Larweh returned to AIMS Ghana and later joined the University of Ghana as a Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics the same year. He contributed to the department's modernization and public engagement efforts while securing a competitive $8,400 grant from The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). He has trained students in high-energy physics, although obtaining funding for further research has been challenging.
Larweh held a Visiting Research position at the University of the Witwatersrand from 2019 to 2022. His research focuses on the dynamics of heavy operators related to black hole physics through gauge/gravity duality, and he is dedicated to building a strong quantum physics research community in Ghana. Despite challenges, his work continues to push the boundaries of scientific knowledge and inspire future physicists.
Recently, Larweh joined ESDEV Foundation Africa as an Associate Member. He serves as a lead scientist in this capacity, designing and implementing key activities for the 2025 International Year of Quantum Science and beyond, ensuring Ghana's active participation in global quantum initiatives.
