Ongoing Project

“Physiological response of three native fish species from Indian Sundarban under different metal toxicity: An approach to determine extent of species specific toxicity” funded by West Bengal State DST. Sanctioned amount Rs 595000/-

Research problem

In recent years, degradation of aquatic ecosystem by heavy metals has become a major concern. Liza sp., Amblypharyngodon sp. and Mystus sp. are three important indigenous fish species of Indian Sunderban area . Besides being ecologically vulnerable, the selected fish species are commercially important. So, our Ongoing project aimed to evaluate the environmental status of four heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cd and Cr). Moreover, the level of different oxidative stress biomarkers was measured in the tissues of Liza sp., Amblypharyngodon sp. and Mystus sp. to determine any tissue-specific or species-specific differences among them. Efforts were also made to determine correlation, if any, between different heavy metals and individual oxidative stress markers to predict the most important biomarker for specific metal contamination.
