Let's go over some of the new features and changes you can make use of on your quest in DQ8MR:
West of the fallen castle of Trodain is a merchant staying at a Church Inn. They have managed to exfiltrate an elite guard's vestment from the castle.
Purchasing and equipping this armor will grant a considerable defense boost as well as some basic resistance to ice and fire attacks. Not to mention a snazzy new look for the Hero!
Hidden inside a chest nestled in the hills of the Northeastern Continent lies the Stone of Tension.
Using this item in battle will allow a single party member to "Psych Up" even more powerfully. For the cost of 12MP, the user will gain 2 levels of tension!
Secret Alchemy Recipe:
(Malleable Metal Blade) + (Heavy Sword) + (Rare Mineral)
A gargantuan blade that takes a great deal of effort to wield- each attack with this sword uses 7MP, but it hits like a truck.
Secret Alchemy Recipe:
(Basic Axe) + (Basic Spear) + (Basic Ring)
This axe + spear combination strikes an enemy twice in one swing. While not incredibly powerful, it can be alchemized from a few cheap ingredients and can serve as a great boon early in your quest.
This fancy equippable accessory can be located North of Maella Abbey in the fields surrounding Peregrin Quay.
At first glance, it only grants a single point of agility but... it greatly improves flee chance when equipped!
As with everything, though, there is a catch- if you successfully flee from an enemy group, your party will lose a small amount of gold.
A small price to pay for some peace and quiet? You decide.
This extra potent brand of Holy Water is hard to come across, but it works wonders when it comes to warding monsters away.
It can be purchased at the Traveler's Bazaar in Argonia and also in the isolated village of Empycchu.
When used, it will keep ALL monsters at bay for quite a large distance. Use this if you need to travel a great ways without interruption.
Purchasable in the isolated village of Empycchu.
As the name implies, this is the customary bow used by the hunters of the village for its deadly accuracy.
Every shot from this bow serves a small chance of a critical strike to the target's weak spot.
Secret Alchemy Recipe:
(Heavy Scythe) + (Lunar Axe) + (Heavy Armor)
One of the strongest scythes in the game- this whopper of a weapon will weaken an enemy's defenses, along with the possibility of critically striking and stunning the target.
While not a brand new item, this one was previously hidden and inaccessible.
Like its 3DS counterpart, this item doubles the amount of experience and gold received from battles, for up to 10 battles.
It can be found on the Holy Isle of Neos, where you'll find it sold by the merchants there. While it isn't cheap by any means, you may find it useful later in your adventure.
This item is held in a bit of secrecy.
It can be purchased from the shop at Princess Minnie's Castle. And while its usefulness isn't immediately apparent, it is not an expensive item, either.
When in your inventory, a new "Compass" option is shown on the map screen while in the overworld. Pressing this will give you latitude and longitude coordinates for your current location.
(Some useful coordinates may be detailed further into this guide at a later date)
Secret Alchemy Recipe:
(Strong Shield) + (Versatile Shield) + (Copper Weapon)
A lightweight, versatile shield that serves as an excellent stopgap for any party members.
Provides rudimentary protection from fire attacks and a basic defense boost.
Better options will come available, but an excellent midgame option.
Secret Alchemy Recipe:
(Evil Spear) + (Flying Knife) + (Dark Wing)
A powerful spear named after an ancient warrior princess. It deals great damage and has a small chance to envenomate enemies upon striking.
Secret Alchemy Recipe:
(Felix's Gift) + (Silver Mineral)*
An enhanced version of Baumren's Bell, this upgrade allows you to call an extra-rare silver sabrecat.
This elegant beast is capable of traveling nearly twice as fast as a regular sabrecat and for greater distances!
*The elusive silver mineral required for this upgrade can be found in Orkutsk.
In the item shop of the Dragovian Sancturary, you will find this unassuming artifact.
This ancient sail, once purchased, will greatly increase the speed of your ship in the open ocean.
Not only that, but it will also reduce the overall number of encounters you will have to face on long sea voyages.
Sail to your heart's content!
Note: The following monsters require the postgame to be reached before they will appear
An incredibly fierce hellhound found in the far reaches of the Orkutsk region. It only comes out at night.
It utilizes devastating breath attacks and will psych itself up beforehand to obliterate your party.
A merciless beast found in the woods of the peninsula West of the Swordsman's Labyrinth.
It can critical strike at any time with devastating damage and boasts a high defense to physical attacks.
A ferociously-fast swordfighter and spellcaster. Can be found on the small peninsula West of Peregrin Quay.
It can cast bounce to reflect any spell attacks, heal itself and dish out damage via sword attacks and kazap.
A balanced, but nevertheless powerful opponent.
Normally only found when several drackies are fused together, you can find this one all by its lonesome in the forest Northwest of Wisher's Peak.
Note: The following monsters require both the postgame to be reached, and a wish for "A Legendary Team Monster" after the Dragovian Trial
The eponymous "Ultimate Slime". This absolute unit of a slime can be found on the abandoned Southern island East of Empycchu.
It will downright crush and smother party members. Not to mention it has ridiculous HP and the ability to heal itself.
Defeating this monstrosity will award you the highest EXP of any enemy in the game.
Forged of the very best materials, this golem will test the very best you have.
It will strike hard and hold nothing back. Prepare for devastating critical hits, and a meteor attack that will deplete your entire party.
Defeating it will award you the highest gold of any enemy in the game.
Secret Alchemy Recipes:
Marcello's Uniform = (Ultimate Ring) + (Holy Uniform) + (Very Pure Water)
Marcello's Rapier = (Super Bird Blade) + (Agile Blade) + (Divine Blade)
By obtaining Marcello's Uniform and equipping it onto Angelo, you can swap the rambunctious loverboy out for the proud nobleman.
Marcello will inherit Angelo's levels and skills, but has a noticeable difference in stats and playstyle.
Marcello has great speed and attack power, but lacks the recovery prowess of his younger brother. A more all-out offensive playstyle better suits him.
Marcello's Rapier will always strike an enemy twice with a single swing. Combining this with Falcon Slash means you can stike an enemy 4 times in one go! Marcello can also cast Kamikazee when Marcello's Uniform is used as an item in battle.
Secret Alchemy Recipes:
Medea's Dress = (Royal Robe) + (Water-Like Dress) + (Wise Robe)
Medea's Staff = (Staff of Life) + (Princess' Headwear) + (Heavenly Ring)
By obtaining Medea's Dress and equipping it onto Jessica, you can swap the spunky sorcerer out for the enchanting princess.
Medea will inherit Jessica's levels and skills, but has a noticeable difference in stats and playstyle.
Medea has noticeably worse base physical attributes, both offensively and defensively. But, she makes up for it with a higher wisdom stat and magic (spell) resistance along with better healing abilities. In short- she's less of a bruiser but can serve the role of a powerful spellcaster with great combat and recovery magic.
Using Medea's Dress as an item in battle allows her to use Kerplunk, fully reviving and healing all allies.
On the other hand, Medea's Staff is one of the better staves in the game; it can lower magic resistance when striking an enemy and will allow Medea to cast Omniheal (for 36MP) when used as an item in battle.
An immensely powerful skill obtainable by the Hero very (very) late into the adventure.
However, unlike the original PS2 version, this skill does not require grinding all the way to level 65 to obtain it.
Instead, you can simply acquire the Dragovian Helm in the postgame. Once you have the Dragovian Helm in your inventory, "use" it as an item in battle to unleash Dragon Soul!
The original design of the Pearly Gates skill has been sequestered to the annals of beta footage and the cutting room floor...until now, that is.
This version of the skill works a little bit differently from the regular counterpart in 2 respects: (1) Instead of only targeting an enemy group, it targets all enemies. (2) Instead of dealing wind elemental damage, it deals light elemental damage.
To employ this ability, just "use" the Templar Captain's Ring as an item in battle.
Many more details coming soon!
