DPMMH Historical Background

Guagua District Hospital, a 25 bed capacity hospital , was constructed through the efforts of the town mayor of Guagua. It was endorsed to the Ministry of Health on January 1974. The hospital was situated then in Cervantes Subdivision, Guagua, Pampanga with a land area of 1,678 square meters. The lot was donated by the owner of the said subdivision, Mr. Blass Cervantes.

Hospital operations started on May 21, 1974 with a total budget of one hundred fifty thousand (PHP 150,000) pesos for its personnel services, maintenance and other operating expenditures. Different services were offered such as General Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Radiology, Family Planning, Laboratory and Medical Services. The hospital served mainly the Municipality of Guagua and its adjacent towns like Sasmuan, Lubao, Sta. Rita and Bacolor. Due to lack of space, the hospital was forced to rent an apartment to serve as a dormitory for hospital personnel. Furthermore, due to increase of patients, almost all of the hospital building was utilized including the corridors.

Though situated in a subdivision in the town proper, the road leading to the hospital was muddy. The said road was flooded during rainy seasons making the land transportation very difficult. There were instances that the hospital can only be reached through bancas. Thus, due to the above mentioned problem, the relocation of the hospital was suggested and considered.

In 1984, the relocation of Guagua District Hospital was brought to the attention of the Governor. During that time the Economic Support Fund Project manager was looking for a provincial project. So, through the recommendation of former Governor Estelito Mendoza, the relocation of the hospital to the new site was agreed upon. The project feasibility was studied by Sycip, Gorres and Velayo (SGV), a well established accounting and auditing firm.

In the earlier part of 1985, the relocation of the hospital was approved. On September 1985 the construction was started and completed in 1986. Complete turnover of the hospital building and its facilities were done on November 1986. The initial budget of the project was fifteen million (PHP 15,000,000) pesos and was later increased to seventeen million (PHP 17,000,000) pesos.

On 1985, Guagua District Hospital was designated as Integrated Provincial Health Office by virtue of Executive Order No. 851, s 1982. The hospital was responsible for the promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative component of health care delivery within the province as provided by the National Government. The hospital is strategically located at the intersection of Gapan-Olongapo and Guagua-Sta. Rita, Pampanga with a total land area of approximately 1.5 hectares. It is easily accessible to all nearby towns and provinces by means of land transportation. The lot was donated by Rustico Coronel, Tiburcio Cruz and Alejandro Manalac of San Matias, Sta. Rita. The new hospital was inaugurated last July 30, 1987.

On November 29, 1989 under Republic Act 6784, the hospital name was officially changed from Guagua District Hospital to Pampanga Provincial Hospital. This was signed by President Corazon Aquino. Due to the influx of patients, hospital management prompted to apply a 100-bed capacity accreditation with the DOH. On February 25, 1992, former President Corazon Aquino signed into law, R.A. 7201 “An act increasing the bed capacity of the Pampanga Provincial Hospital from 25 to 100 beds and appropriate funds thereof.”, but sadly, said law was never implemented. In 1993, Pampanga Provincial Hospital was changed to Diosdado P. Macapagal Memorial Hospital by virtue of Sanggunian Resolution No. 172 and was accredited by PhilHealth for Safety and Quality Patient Care.

On December 2012, in line with the celebration of the 441st Pampanga Day Anniversary, the newly constructed 102 bed capacity two-storey hospital building inside DPMMH compound was inaugurated by Dr. Leonita Gorgolon of the Center for Health Development of DOH Region III and Governor Lilia G. Pineda. It was formally turned over to the Provincial Government headed by Governor Lilia Pineda and Dr. Eddie G. Ponio, the chief of hospital at that time.

On 2013, the different departments, headed by Medical Specialists, started to operate. At present, the hospital is designated as a level 1 hospital with approved 75 bed capacity but operating at more than 100 bed capacity. With the influx of patients and being designated as the Provincial Hospital, this prompted the hospital management to apply for 150 bed capacity level 2 hospital.
