Apple's next generation of iPhones is generating enormous buzz, and for good reason the iPhone 18 lineup promises to be one of the most transformative in Apple's history. From a groundbreaking foldable model to a shaken-up release schedule, here is a complete rundown of everything the rumor mill has revealed so far.
Apple is expected to break from its longstanding tradition of releasing all iPhone models in a single fall event. The more expensive iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will launch in the fall of 2026 as usual, but the more affordable iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e models won't come out until spring 2027.
Most projections place the unveiling in September 2026, aligning with the company's long-standing annual release pattern. Based on Apple's well-established release schedule, the iPhone 18 series is expected to debut in September 2026, likely around September 8th if previous announcements are anything to go by.
The rumored change is tied to Apple's expanding iPhone lineup. With the introduction of the iPhone 16e and iPhone Air in 2025, the expected debut of the first foldable iPhone in 2026, and the continued presence of older models, there could be at least eight distinct iPhone models on sale from Apple by the end of 2026.
Without question, the headline story of the iPhone 18 era is the long-rumored foldable iPhone. Apple's first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Fold, is expected to sport a 7.6-inch inner foldable display and a 5.3-inch outer display. It's also thought that the iPhone Fold will benefit from a new type of foldable display and hinge that has a shallower crease than most Android foldables.
The first foldable iPhone will open up book style, which means it will have a smaller outer display and then a larger, wider open display.
As for price, a starting price between $1,999 and $2,500 has been suggested, with the latest figure being around $2,399. That makes it roughly comparable or even pricier than a MacBook Pro.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are likely to retain much of the iPhone 17 Pro line's design, with Apple reportedly reusing manufacturing molds, meaning the Dynamic Island will stay largely the same.
Screen sizes should be consistent with the 6.3 and 6.9-inch displays found on the current models. One possible design change is with the charging area on the back of the iPhone 18 Pro models — the ceramic shield section will reportedly be "slightly transparent."
Color-wise, Apple is rumored to be testing three new color options for the iPhone 18 Pro models: burgundy, brown, and purple. A burgundy finish would mark the first time the Pro and Pro Max models have been offered in any shade of red, apart from the lighter (PRODUCT)RED used on earlier devices.
The A20 processor could be the star of the show. It will be faster and more efficient thanks to being built on TSMC's 2nm process.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max will feature a 5,100 to 5,200 mAh battery, with additional efficiency improvements coming alongside the 2-nanometer A20 Pro chip.
On the RAM front, the standard iPhone 18 could be upgraded to 12GB RAM, with all iPhone 18 models — including the iPhone Fold — set to feature 12GB RAM.
One of the biggest customer-facing upgrades will be to the main camera system. It is expected to get a variable aperture, which means users will be able to control the focus and bokeh using a physical lens element.
All iPhone 18 models will also include a 24-megapixel front-facing camera, up from 18 megapixels. Additionally, the iPhone 18 will feature an improved display, and Apple is said to have unprecedentedly high requirements for brightness, which at least one supplier is reportedly struggling to meet.
A report from The Information says that Apple is gearing up to support 5G networks served from satellites, namely Starlink satellites. While the iPhone has offered satellite connectivity for emergency situations for years, this would allow iPhone 18 models to have full internet access via satellite, not just emergency services.
The C2 modem is expected to be used in iPhone 18 and will offer mmWave 5G. It should also feature Apple's in-house Wi-Fi 7 chip.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo does not believe that Apple will raise the price of the iPhone 18 Pro models, with the company instead absorbing the added memory costs to gain market share. For reference, the iPhone 17 currently starts at $799, the iPhone 17 Pro at $1,099, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max at $1,199.
One of the most hotly debated features is whether Face ID will finally move under the display. Some earlier reports had speculated that Apple might switch to a hole-punch camera design positioned in the top-left corner for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, potentially paired with an under-display infrared Face ID sensor. However, newer reports suggest Apple may hold off on this change.
The iPhone 18 era marks a pivotal moment for Apple. Between the first-ever foldable iPhone, a new staggered launch strategy, the powerful A20 chip, satellite internet connectivity, and major camera improvements, there is plenty to be excited about. The 2026 Pro launches will highlight larger batteries, powerful chips, and camera enhancements, while the overall package makes this a strategic, multi-phase launch for Apple.
For those eyeing the standard iPhone 18, patience will be required but the wait may well be worth it.
