In 1960, he became an assistant coach at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California. He was promoted to head coach in 1962. Madden went 12-6 in two seasons, including an 8-1 mark in 1963,[36] during which his Bulldogs were ranked No. 9 nationally among city colleges.[37] Following the 1963 season, he was hired as a defensive assistant coach at San Diego State, where he served through 1966. During that final campaign, the 1966 Aztecs were ranked among the top small colleges in the country.[19] While at San Diego State, Madden coached under Don Coryell, whom Madden credited as being an influence on his coaching.[38]

Building on that success, Madden was hired by Al Davis as linebackers coach for the AFL's Oakland Raiders in 1967,[39] putting him in the Sid Gillman coaching tree.[40] He helped the team reach Super Bowl II that season. A year later, after Raiders head coach John Rauch resigned to take the same position with the Buffalo Bills,[41] Madden was named the Raiders' head coach on February 4, 1969, becoming, at the age of 32, the AFL/NFL's youngest head coach to that time.[42]

Among Madden's accomplishments as a head coach were winning a Super Bowl, and becoming the youngest coach to reach 100 career regular-season victories, a record he compiled in only ten full seasons of coaching at the age of 42.[52] Madden is still the coach with the most wins in Raiders history.[53]

Madden never had a losing season as a head coach. His overall winning percentage, including playoff games, ranks second in league history behind Guy Chamberlin and is the highest among those who coached 100 games.[54] Madden achieved his record during a period that included head coaches Tom Landry, Don Shula, Chuck Noll, and Bud Grant, who are generally regarded as the top coaches of that era.[55]

The EA Sports series continues to use his name, iconography and licence following his death, and announced on Madden Day (June 1, 2022) that all editions of Madden NFL 23 would feature Madden on the cover in tribute of his legacy, with the next gen version cover being a picture of Madden celebrating his victory as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XI and the All Madden Edition cover being based on the cover of the series' 1st installment, John Madden Football.[94]

John Head, 88, drew his final, peaceful breath on July 1, 2018 at Genesis Healthcare in Whitefish. He was born in Oklahoma in 1930, his childhood reflected the harsh times of the country and era. As a young man, John worked with his father running pack trains in the Sierras and Yosemite. On one of his long rides into the valley near Selma he met Minnie Dean Eslick, whom he soon married.

Health advocates say such a tragedy as this helps underscore a significant fact, mainly that warning signs that lead to suicide often go unnoticed, particularly among young men of color. Today then we take a closer look at why that seems to keep happening and what if anything can be done to change this downward spiral that claims too many lives each year. Dr. Alvin Poussaint is a psychiatry professor at Harvard Medical School and a national director of KidsPeace, a national children's crisis charity that helps young people overcome life-threatening traumas and personal crisis. He joins us from Philadelphia today.

COX: OK. We've got that one right. Let me ask both of you to chime in on this. I want to start with you first, Dr. Poussaint. What strikes you about this suicide? Are there signs that were missed?--because there seems to have been two faces to this young man. On one side, happy and polite, and on the other side, deeply troubled beneath the surface.

One thing in the black community and some other racial groups, too, often blacks will express their depression through bodily symptoms; that is, headaches, stomach aches, pain and so on. That's a presenting symptom, but really what they're talking about is, `I'm feeling depressed. And I'm feeling lousy. And my body feels lousy,' but because of the stigma about mental illness, they are not as likely to say, `I'm having a mental problem and I'm depressed. They may complain about physical symptoms as a way of minimizing the feeling of stigma.

Mr. HEAD: I do. And I have spoken with them and I speak with them and I try to get them to speak with me if there are things that are troubling. And what I worry about in that age group is, you know, the idea that some people in that age group have that life really doesn't have any value, not only their lives but the lives of others. And, you know, that's something that we really have to fight again and, you know, get that idea out of their heads of our young people, especially our young men.

Grey is a fine swordsman, having first begun lessons at the age of three. At a young age, he once struck Hal on the leg with a sword, doing no lasting damage but leaving a scar. He was enrolled for The Society for the Appreciation of the English Beefsteak, a gentlemen's club, upon his birth by his godfather, who began taking him there for lunch every Wednesday starting when he was seven. As an adult, Grey continues to frequent the club, preferring it to White's, of which he is also a member.

Thoroughly shamed, Grey's elder brother Hal chose to be referred to by his lesser title, the Earl of Melton, rather than take on one that was associated with such a scandal. As the head of the family, Melton's choice was accepted by his mother, who became known as the Dowager Countess instead of the Dowager Duchess. If John had followed suit, he would have been called the Honourable John Grey, as befitting an earl's younger son. However, John insisted on continuing to be called Lord John, as befitting a duke's younger son. Immediately after his father's death, Grey was sent to Aberdeen, Scotland, to stay with his mother's family and avoid the scandal, although it was not until much later in his life that Grey came to realize this was done for his own protection. 006ab0faaa
