It seems like there are so many things they could have done to convey JD as younger, like blonde facial hair, heavy makeup or face tape, even CGI with the budget and scale of this show. It seems like there must be a reason for it. It was a big chink in the armor for me watching the show.

I am binge watching LOST on netflix and came to episode 11 season 4 "cabin fever" which flashbacks to John's birth and young adulthood. Richard comes to visit John to take him to a school for the gifted. He presents him with a basketball glove, a book, comic book, knife, tube of sand and compass and asks which items are his. John chooses the sand, compass and knife. Richard gets upset and leaves, "you aren't ready."
