Alabama is once again appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court a lower court ruling that found the state's map of congressional election districts likely violates the Voting Rights Act by weakening Black voters' power.

For the 2024 elections, the judges have assigned court-appointed experts to draw three potential maps that each include two districts where Black voters have a realistic opportunity of electing their preferred candidate. Those redistricting proposals are due to the court by Sept. 25.

A federal district court, in a 2-1 decision Friday, implemented Ohio state Senate and House district maps for the 2022 election that have twice been declared unconstitutional partisan gerrymanders by the Ohio Supreme Court.

Republicans on the redistricting commission used the fact that elections officials were already ordered to use the maps as part of their decision to pass the maps a second time, and the federal court in April pointed to counties already using Map 3 as justification for its choosing it for implementation.

LaRose is among the four commissioners who voted for the maps both times. Others were Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Republican legislative leaders representing the Ohio House and Senate (originally Ohio House Speaker Bob Cupp and Senate President Matt Huffman, then their chosen replacements on the commission, state Rep. Jeff LaRe, and state Sen. Sen. Rob McColley).

Hello Chris. I also had a problem after updating courses. TOPO maps work fine for me. I deleted the files manually and reinstalled via GC. Now, after turning on the watch, I do not have a message (when loading maps), only after disconnecting the cable from the computer - PC. In GC, after connecting, it also shows me that I have 3 courses uploaded, after re-entering - it only sees one on the list in GC.

This can happen, it's still just a device, it's enough for me if the problem is solved by another update or some instructions on how to proceed in this case. I already deleted the maps, re-uploaded and it didn't fix the problem.

Lawsuits may be the only way that citizens can gain more information about why lawmakers drew boundaries beyond their public talking points. Changes to public record rules in the state budget repeal a law that gave the public access to legislative records and communications related to redistricting as soon as maps were adopted.

A special master appointed by a panel of three federal judges released three congressional map proposals on Monday that would pit two incumbents against each other and most likely result in two Democrats being elected to Congress from Alabama in 2024.

Each map would place Coffee County, which is currently represented by second congressional district U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), into the first congressional district, potentially pitting Moore against incumbent U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile).

Adam Kincaid, president and executive director of the National Republican Redistricting Trust, told 1819 News on Monday, "The Special Master's maps perfectly illustrate the concerns Alabama and NRRT have repeatedly raised to the District Court and to SCOTUS."

Marshall is currently appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court a federal district court ruling against Alabama in the case of Allen v. Milligan, saying it could not use the new congressional map developed by the Alabama Legislature during a special session in July for the 2024 election. A decision on whether the U.S. Supreme Court will stay the lower court's ruling is expected soon.

After a string of remarkable victories, Black voters in Alabama are closer than ever to winning relief from discriminatory maps. But alas, as unfortunately is often the case in redistricting litigation, there are more rounds to go before we know if that relief will come in time for the 2024 election or whether justice will be delayed yet again.

Meteorologists regularly use contour maps to see how weather variables (temperature or pressure, for example) change over large areas, but they also use them to estimate values of weather variables at individual points. To get us started on interpreting contour maps, we're first going to revisit our topographic map of Hawaii (right).

How would we go about figuring out the elevation of the point marked "P"? First, we must identify the two contours that lie on either side of "P." In some cases the contours that we need are clearly labeled; however, in other instances, you will need to use the contour interval (1,000 feet, in this case) to "count" up or down from a labeled contour. On our map, point "P" lies between 3000 feet and 4000 feet contours, so the elevation at point "P" is greater than (but not equal to) 3000 feet but less than (but again, not equal to) 4000 feet. We know that point "P" is not equal to either of these values because it does not lie on one of the contour lines.

What about closed contours that have no other contours drawn within them? Look again at the contour map and focus your attention on the southern-most peak, Mauna Loa. How might we estimate the height of this peak? Clearly, we do not have two contours to use... or do we? The last drawn contour is 13,000 feet. This means that the peak is higher than 13,000 feet. However, we know that the summit of Mauna Loa is not higher than 14,000 feet. Why? Well, if it were, then the 14,000 feet contour would have been drawn around the summit. So, for an inner-most closed contour, the range is always between the last drawn contour and the next undrawn contour. You should also note that interpolation cannot be performed in such cases because we have no way of knowing how far away the undrawn contour is. The summit of Mauna Loa is 13,452 ft (within our deduced range of 13,000-14,000 feet), but we really couldn't have known that just from our topographic map (unless the peak elevation was labeled). e24fc04721
