The drifting stars are simply indicators of which axis needs tweaking which way. The whole point is to mechanically align the RA axis with the Earths polar axis. Drift aligning is an iterative process done in 2 of 3 specific locations in the sky. There would be no point what-so-ever to letting the mount run for 24 hours through daylight.

Switch off between sessions of drift alignment? If wanting a star to not drift from a given pixel, even when not using the scope for, say, two days, then you have to do an uninterrupted drift alignment for this duration beforehand. The 'uninterrupted' is the keyword, isn't it.

To go to the extremes without using fancy digital helper tools, even if it's utterly crazy and totally unnecessary. I am wondering for a long time, and would now finally lie my mind to rest in this question if that's possible and under what restrictions (maybe mount dependent?).

You cannot 'drift align' on a single specific star for longer than fifteen minutes or so. Drift aligning has to be done on the celestial equator at/near one horizon or the other (E or W) and the Meridian. You make adjustments in azimuth with the horizon star and then go to one at the Meridian to make altitude adjustments. Any 'drift' that occurs between those two points is a mixture of both az and alt misalignment and useless for making adjustments.

Nevermind letting the mount run through daylight from one night to the next, you cannot even 'drift align' across the whole sky in a single night. You must iterate between the horizon and meridian points on whatever star happens to be in those positions.

Because you'd be waiting 23h 40m to do the exact same adjustment you already did the night before. You cannot drift align on a single specific star unless you want to wait 6 hours inbetween iterations when that star is in the correct position in the sky for using it's drift to make an adjustment. Which would give you 2, maybe 3 adjustments a night.

Is it also possible to continue drift aligning in the following night? Meaning that the telescope follows the star throughout the day and below the horizon and one can take the alignment accuracy to the extremes this way? Of course no need for this, but I am just asking...

If for no other reason than the earth's polar axis continuously changing due to precession, there are limits to how exact polar alignment can be done regardless of your stamina for multi-day exercises in drift scanning.

If wanting to wait 23h 40m to do the exact same thing, so be it. Nothing wrong with stamina. It would be more precise than the alignment of a single 20 minutes because the same star had time to drift of the position over 23h 40m... Albeit, the alignment process has to be interrupted for almost a day on this star.

I now see also that it isn't necessary to let the scope turn 360 and make the cable twin up. One can simply target the same star of the previous night at the same time and if one hasn't changed anything in the mounts alignment the position of that star respective to the crosshair is the true drift of it during 23h 40m.

The same star of course can't be used again until it's at about the same position in the sky again as Mike7Mak wrote.
