I have also though of remapping the mouse wheel to some other function through its software, but I cannot guess to what. Obviously if I just disable the wheel up/down events, it will not work with the controls either.

Hello, I tried this but it doesn't work. I placed it in the plug-in folder like it said to but the mouse center button still zooms in and out. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I also tried the other one where you place it in the FlyWithLua scripts folder and it doesn't work either.

Yes, so the plugin doesn't do anything by itself until you go to the control mapper and map a key (or button - or both) to the command. In fact the two plugins recommended here - work exactly the same way - they create new commands in x-plane you can map to an input.
