Upgrading: You do NOT need to uninstall an existing version of CHIRP before installing a newer one. Just install the new one and it will replace the existing copy! However, be sure to quit CHIRP before installing the new version!

The "legacy" build of chirp contains support for some drivers that are not yet fixed in CHIRP-next due to ongoing development efforts. However, it no longer receives any updates, including new models, bug fixes, etc. If you have a radio that does not work in CHIRP-next because it requires attention, you may choose to run the older legacy version. Windows users may want to download the .zip file and keep it separate from their installed version of CHIRP-next.

I would check the versions of each package above and remove anything that was installed via your pipx attempts. I would at least logoff/logon after any cleanup, just in case. I got the same results on XFCE and KDE.

Side note: I have installed the package mlocate, so I can do a locate wxpython. There is a systemd timer that runs updatedb on a regular basis (systemctl list-timers). find is a standard gnu utility. Where find transverses the file system in realtime, mlocate/updatedb maintains a database.

Hi to all, I am new to this community as well as Ubuntu and Chirpstack. I get a simple error when trying to install the network server. I followed the installation guide on the chirpstack site. Successfully install ed the gateway bridge as described. When I get to the network server install:

I then tried to install the Applicaiton Server which I again could only find as version 3.17 + . During the install the screen comes up to a loading application gray screen and just stays there. Tried a couple different releases of the package and got the same result.

Hi Martin,

So far I have not been able to complete the installation of the Chirpstack components. I am thinking since I have had such difficulty that I should start fresh and do a new Ubuntu install on this computer without dual boot and maybe a newer version. What version of Ubuntu do you think I should install?

@Oskar93All I did was Rcns chirp-next.Search my drive for chirp files. Delete them as found. Mine was a hidden folder in my Home directory.Reboot 'optional'Reinstall chirp-next. Read the terminal after install and follow prompts for permissions.

I bought a Baofeng BF-T1 radio and needed to write the channel configurations into it, so I googled a bit and found out that it can be done with CHIRP but I could not find an easy way to install it without littering the operating system's Python.

Of course there are some preconditions, you need to have wget, xarchiver, python2.7, pip2.7 and virtualenv already installed and a permission for /dev/ttyUSBx devices or belong to dialout group, below is the script: (should work for debian / ubuntu but WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY)

The next step in setting up my Kraken 13.5 Jackson Kayak is the Lowrance Elite 4 CHIRP Sounder Installation. I got the call from Brent at OEX Mission Bay to say all the parts had arrived and they were ready to start. I already had the video/photo gear packed and ready so I drove over to document the installation process. Grant did an awesome job! Here is the video of the whole install.

In our testing, the driver installed automatically in Windows 10. The driver was already pre-installed on macOS and Arch Linux (Arch is a barebones Linux version, so it should also be pre-installed on more-popular Linux distributions like Ubuntu and Fedora).

One of the most common areas that fishermen add or upgrade on their boats is the electronics. Larger and brighter screens, down imaging, side imaging, Chirp sonar, GPS and now even 3D sonar are just some of the things that make adding or upgrading your marine electronics so appealing. But as sophisticated and advanced as these units are, the installation is really pretty straight forward and simple.

1. First you still need to follow the original instruction in installing the repository

 sudo apt-add-repository ppa:dansmith/chirp-snapshots

 sudo apt-get update

 sudo apt-get install chirp-daily

We downloaded it from the official CHIRP website, but on Windows just run it as Administrator mode in *.EXE and we will start the installation procedure.

But how to install it on Linux Ubuntu 20.04 or 22.04?

Ubuntu provides a package in its own repositories, which can be installed with the package management programs, either search for it in the software center or install it with the command

sudo apt install chirp

(Note: The version in the Ubuntu repositories is not the very newest one.)

I have Ubuntu 20.04, and have installed Python 3.10 manually. There's python 2 in the system already, and that's what I get if I simply execute python at a command line, rather than python3. However, I only seem to have a version of pip that is specific to python3.

EDIT. I found this page: setting up pipenv and virtualenvironments and I seem to have moved forward. I now seem to have an actual virtual environment built around /usr/bin/python (which is python2.7), and using it, pip -install serial worked. However, after doing this, it's now complaining that it can't find the module gtk, and the attempt to load that module fails saying there's no such module:

You can run pip via Python by doing python -m pip. That will run the Python 2 version. For example, if python went to Python 2, and you wanted to use the Python 2 version of pip to install the pyserial library, you could do this:

Fortunately, there are other options available, and once properly installed, they are actually quite good. You just need to know where to find these options and how to install them properly. Once that is accomplished, programming is usually a breeze.

To find and install the Baofeng USB Programming Cable driver and programming software correctly, follow the instructions below. NOTE: follow these instructions completely and in order. Failure to do so may only bring more frustration when things don't work.

- If there is a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark next to the USB device, Windows did not install the driver correctly. To correct the issue, right-click on the device and choose Update Driver Software on the pop-up menu. Choose Browse My Computer to install the driver manually. Choose Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer. Choose Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port Version: 3.2.0.0 and click NEXT. The correct driver should install and the yellow notification should disappear from the Device Manager. Note the COM Port number.

* Additional Instructions for Windows laptops *

On some laptops, the device manager may indicate the cable is installed correctly, but CHIRP may not detect the COM Port. This may occur if Windows Power Management is enabled on the device. To activate the cable, go to the Device Manager and right click on Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COMX). X denotes the COM port number. Click Properties on the pop-up menu. Click the Power Management tab. Remove the check from the box next to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power and click Apply or Save.

As an authorized Baofeng Dealer, we want installation to be as easy and painless as possible so you can enjoy your radios for many years to come. If these instructions are followed correctly, you should not have any difficulty connecting the Baofeng radio to your computer. After the initial setup, future connection to the computer should be a matter of simply plugging the USB programming cable into your radio and computer and running CHIRP.

Note: If you followed the installation instructions and are still having trouble, there is now another solution available. The XLT Painless Programming Cable installs quickly and easily on computers with Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Installation is automatic on many systems with little or no user interaction required. The XLT Painless Programming Cable works with Baofeng, Kenwood, Wouxun and other two way radios equipped with standard two pin Kenwood connectors.

Update: Hear our review of the Baofeng UV-5R Programming Cable in Episode #82 of The Two Way Radio Show Podcast!

I installed Windows 7 (32 bit) and latest RME drivers and firmware recently. Running the latest version of Cubase 5. All software is legit and registered. Unfortunately my Fireface doesn't like this setup evidently. I'm hearing little chirps and scratches when playing ALL vsti's within Cubase. I have played with latency but nothing helps. I am using a Firewire card with Texas Instruments chipset.

Ah! That identified the problem. I was getting a big CPU spike about every 30 seconds or so. I went into device manager and disabled my network card and bing, no more chirps and scratches. In the past disconnecting from the net during recording was enough. Apparently no longer.

What is needed for installation? We have found the following tools to be helpful when installing the AFS: a post hole digger, a digging bar, a shovel, a wheelbarrow or comparable cement mixing tub, a level (one that can attach to a post is best), a large measured water container, a box cutter, a socket set, a Phillips head screwdriver, an adjustable crescent wrench, a rubber mallet, and a short ladder or three-foot high box to rest the AFS on when it is horizontal on the ground. e24fc04721
