When Will Smith stormed onto the Oscar stage to strike Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife’s short hair, he did a lot more damage than just to Rock’s face. With a single petulant blow, he advocated violence, diminished women, insulted the entertainment industry, and perpetuated stereotypes about the Black community.

This patronizing, paternal attitude infantilizes women and reduces them to helpless damsels needing a Big Strong Man to defend their honor lest they swoon from the vapors. If he was really doing it for his wife, and not his own need to prove himself, he might have thought about the negative attention this brought on them, much harsher than the benign joke. That would have been truly defending and respecting her. This “women need men to defend them” is the same justification currently being proclaimed by conservatives passing laws to restrict abortion and the LGBTQ+ community.

This is normally not a place for movie reviews but once in a while a film comes along that I cannot help but discuss. Focus starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie is just such a film. Unfortunately, for all the wrong reasons.

On July 29, he made his first on-camera apology with a YouTube video titled "It's been a minute ..." In it, Smith addressed why he didn't apologize to Rock when he won best actor just minutes after the confrontation.

"I was fogged out by that point. It's all fuzzy. I've reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he's not ready to talk, and when he is he will reach out," Smith said. "So I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you."

Host Jimmy Kimmel did not shy away from addressing the slap at the 2023 ceremony. In fact, he brought it up in his opening monologue, joking that with multiple Irish actors all in the running for Oscars, "the odds of another fight on stage just went way up."

He added, "We want you to feel safe, most importantly we want me to feel safe ... so we have strict policies in place. If anyone in this theater commits an act of violence during this show, you will be awarded the Oscar for best actor and permitted to give a 19-minute long speech."

"Seriously," he added. "The academy has a crisis team in place. If anything unpredictable happens during the ceremony, just do what you did last year: Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Maybe even give the assailant a hug."

He started his acceptance speech by name-checking the man he plays in "King Richard" and it wasn't long before tears were streaming down his face as he drew parallels between the movie and what had just happened.

Smith still earned his second World Series ring in as many seasons, and after signing with the Rangers in free agency during the offseason, he now has his third. With his one-year deal coming to a close, the veteran reliever enters free agency again. It remains to be seen where Smith will land, but whichever team he ends up on might have some good fortune in store in 2024.

"If anyone in this theater commits an act of violence at any point during the show, you will be awarded the Oscar for best actor and permitted to give a 19-minute long speech," he said, referencing Smith's win in 2022 following the slap

Kimmel didn't restrict his slap jokes just to the monologue. The host also seized the opportunity to bring up the incident ahead of the best documentary feature category, saying he hoped it would go off without a "Hitch," referencing the 2005 romantic comedy in which Smith starred, playing the title role.

Kimmel got in another dig when mentioning the number of Irish actors in the room, saying that the "odds of another fight on stage just went way up." He also referenced Smith's 1997 hit song, saying anybody who wanted to "get jiggy with it" would have to go through a gauntlet of bodyguards composed of famous audience members.

"He had stayed up late to see his Uncle Will. We're sitting in my kitchen, and he's on my lap and he's holding the Oscar. And he's just like, 'Why'd you hit that man Uncle Will?' " Smith said, pausing to wipe away tears.

And for those of you who read the book, his actions last Sunday will not strike you as unfamiliar. The book had extensive discussion of his deep insecurities around failing to protect the women in his life. We talked about the culture of violence of his neighborhood and family growing up. We wrote candidly about his relationship to fighting and how, particularly when he was young, he had a propensity to start physical altercations unnecessarily. We discussed his relentless perfectionism and how he sometimes achieved that perfectionism through intimidation and fear of those around him.

Yet, people do this with the celebrities they love all the time. For some reason, we decide that just because a guy can shoot a basketball well, we expect him to be a great businessman, a great father, a great husband, a great community leader, to have informed and nuanced political views (that also match our own), to have upstanding ethics and little-to-no emotional dysfunction. Oh, and he has to do all this while never complaining.

The point was that 99% of the people losing their collective shit over Putin and Ukraine on social media will have likely forgotten or lost interest in it within a few weeks. And, indeed, that seems to be the case. How do I know? Because those are largely the same people freaking out and filling our news feeds about The Will Smith Slap these past few days.

But, if we put down a boundary - a simple boundary that has everything to do with protecting our peace and nothing at all to do with educating you or making you feel better about yourself - then we are being divisive. We are violating the agreement you thought you had with us: that we will educate you and center you and give you a way to dispose of all of this icky guilt and in return you will put a Black Lives Matter sign in your window and occasionally yell at your Trump supporter uncle (who you never liked anyway) at Thanksgiving.

I’m just starting out with that because while this piece was inspired by conversations around Will Smith slapping Chris Rock for making an ableist joke about his Black wife in front of a room (and worldwide tv audience) of white people, it’s not about Will Smith and Chris Rock. If I don’t clarify that, some of y’all are gonna be annoying in the comments.

On Sunday evening I, like so many other people, rushed into a room and said to a loved one, “Holy shit Will Smith just slapped Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars for insulting Jada onstage.”
