From humble beginnings in 1960 with a few women deciding to deliver meals to their elderly neighbors, to serving over 600,000 meals throughout the entire county, Meals on Wheels is devoted to the health, safety, and well-being of San Diego seniors.

Distributing home-delivered meals and safety checks could not be accomplished without the help of our very large and caring volunteer workforce who deliver meals with a hug and a smile and ensure our homebound seniors are OK. Frequently the volunteer may be the only person the senior sees all day, providing human contact and a safety net, particularly for those seniors living alone. Lives are saved nearly every week as a result of acquiring the proper emergency personnel for someone who has fallen, had a stroke, or is simply in need of additional resources.

100% of your donation will be used for the preparation and delivery of meals, thanks to our partnership with the New York City Department for the Aging, along with gifts from our board of directors and others designated for administrative expenses.

Meals on Wheels provides two meals a day to homebound adults age 60 or older, or adults of any age with a chronic health condition or disability who meet program eligibility guidelines, and live in Frederick County. A hot meal is delivered midday, accompanied by a cold meal that can be refrigerated and eaten later. Participants must be homebound due to illness or physical limitations, not able to prepare meals, and have no caregiver to assist with food shopping and preparation, or cannot safely prepare food due to physical, mental, or emotional impairment.

Meals are planned and prepared to meet the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) for older adults. Special diets currently offered include regular, diabetic/low carbohydrate, low sodium, and mechanical soft menus. Additional special diets may be available from some vendors.

Home delivered meals are available for homebound older adults, 60 years or older who meet the program eligibility requirements and live within the service areas of senior centers in Brunswick, Emmitsburg, Frederick and Urbana. Homebound older adults who are unable to participate in a congregate dining program due to health problems can benefit from home delivered meals as a way to remain in their homes and communities while maintaining nutritional health.

In addition, all centers schedule special event meals such as Lunch & Learns and celebration meals. Please check the monthly activity calendar for details. These special event meals require advance reservation. Please note, some meals have a set cost associated with the event and payment is due at the time of reservation. Please contact the center supervisor for additional information or if the fee is a hardship.

Safety Check:

Volunteers who deliver meals play a vital role by reporting any health and environmental changes or crises they may have observed during their visits. This includes participants that did not answer their door and changes in behavior and/or surroundings. Reported and suspected issues will be immediately addressed to carry-out next steps as previously outlined by participants or their caregivers. Meals on Wheels staff establish a baseline of function and environment at the initial home visit and annually thereafter.

Special dietary considerations are available for those with chronic health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. This delivery serves as a daily check- in by a friendly driver. Drivers are trained to identify and report observations or emergencies that might indicate a medical problem or the need for more intervention. A nutritious meal delivered by a friendly driver goes a long way in helping maintain independence. Deliveries are made between 10 am and 2 pm, Monday through Friday in the following cities or towns: Brimfield, Hampden, Holland, Palmer, Springfield, Wales, and Wilbraham.

We are an independent, non-profit organization not affiliated with any other program, and have been delivering hot, healthy meals, safety checks and peace of mind to our homebound neighbors since 1974.
