The "House of Welcome" Longhouse Education and Cultural Center opened on Evergreen's Olympia Campus in 1995. As a public service center of the college, the House of Welcome's mission is to promote Indigenous arts and cultures through education, cultural preservation, creative expression and economic development.

Many people and Tribes contributed to the construction of the House of Welcome, which was completed in 1995. Past graduating classes of Evergreen students designated a portion of their fees to go toward the creation of the welcome figures for the entrance to the House of Welcome. The Quinault Indian Nation donated much of the timber used in the building; the Burke Museum donated cedar shakes and posts from the Sea Monster House (a model longhouse that was part of the 1962 World's Fair in Seattle); the Squaxin Island Tribe held fundraising dinners; the Makah and Skokomish Tribes provided cultural and spiritual leadership; and the Washington State Legislature allocated $2.2 million for the construction of the building.

The buidling opened with over 1,000 people in attendance, including Governor Mike Lowry, and many Tribal dignitaries. The inaugural year of the Longhouse coincided with the first year of the Daniel J. Evans Scholar program, which brought five Native American scholars to campus: Hazel Pete of Chehalis, John Hottowe of Makah, Billy Frank Jr. of Nisqually, and Buffy St. Marie of Cree. In 1997, it received its name "s'gi gi  altx, which means House of Welcome, from Vi Hilbert of Upper Skagit, Bruce Miller of Skokomish, Pauline Hillaire of Lummi, John and Edie Hottowe of Makah, Hazel Pete of Chehalis and David Whitener of Squaxin Island.

The street outreach program has brought 69 adults and two children to the organization. 116 adults and 81 children have been prevented from becoming homeless. The rapid rehousing program has housed 31 adults and 21 children, Amrine said.

The development will also provide a house substance case manager, two mental health case managers, and a registered nurse. The case managers will oversee the units and tenants with combined efforts, Amrine said.

The Illinois Zoological and Aquatic Animal Residency provides extensive exposure and training in the medical care of zoo-housed wild animals, native wildlife, and companion zoological species. These opportunities will allow me to develop my skills as a veterinarian and provide the highest level of care in my future career.

After completing my residency, I aspire to become board-certified in zoological and aquatic animal medicine and pursue a career in clinical medicine at a traditional zoo/aquarium, while also conducting research to further the knowledge and medical care of zoo-housed and free-ranging wild animals.

The restoration itself took just under a year and was a massive undertaking. We faced extensive rot in the floors and walls, termite damage, hundreds of thousands of bees living within the exterior columns, and had to bring the house up to code with electrical and plumbing and a functioning kitchen.

We are absolutely passionate about this work and are honored to know that this special house is going to be a welcoming place for visitors and for these incredible young women who are seeking to change the trajectory of their lives.

Renting an unused missionary guest house from a local church, Welcome House officially opened in 2019 to provide short-term housing for refugees or other internationals. The ministry also recruited Sunny Ikojoh, who came to the U.S. as an international student, to serve as the minister of hospitality for guest families.

We have used Welcome house for many years as a resources for numerous issues facing our children with disabilities. they are always wiling to go the extra mile, and care about each individual with whom they interface. They struggle with the same issues all agencies do these days (i.e., high turnover, lower wages than they would like to pay, increasing needs of clients, etc.), but they work each issue as it comes up. I trust them and that they will do everything within their power to make things the best they can be for their clients. e24fc04721
