Wara has traditionally been used for roofing in local villages, or woven into shoes, bags, and even as a blanket covering for the dead. For the festival, students and volunteers construct massive wooden frame skeletons, then add individual layers of wara over two weeks to complete the sculptures. Many techniques are used to create these straw behemoths, including the method for constructing thatched roofs and basket weaving.

Interactions: Wara ningy are used extensively as wards against evil. During the Heian period, wara ningy would be placed along the sides of the roads for protection against plague. It was hoped that the evil spirits which brought disease would nest in the straw bodies instead of living human bodies. Afterwards, the straw dolls would be discarded into a river, which would also purify the evil spirits.

Wara ningy are popular devices in a number of dark rituals. They are combined with something from the recipient of the curse, such as a piece of hair. This transforms the doll into a substitute for the intended target. Long nails are pushed through the wara ningy, harming the subject as well as the doll.

The rural, coastal Niigata prefecture in Northern Japan is known for its wealth of rice paddies, which produce a rich harvest each fall. After the rice is harvested and the grain extracted, a huge amount of rice straw is leftover, called wara.

The massive creatures are made from leftover wara, or straw, which is traditionally used to create household items like baskets and zori sandals. The festival first came about in 2008 when a professor from Tokyo's Musashino Art University suggested a collaboration between the university and local farmers to use up the otherwise discarded rice straw. 006ab0faaa
