The first series was primarily edited from Beast King GoLion (Hyakuj- Goraion), and it features a team of five young pilots commanding five robot lions which can be combined to form Voltron. In this undefined future era, the Voltron Force is in charge of protecting the planet Arus (ruled by Princess Allura) from the evil King Zarkon (from planet Doom), his son Lotor, and the witch Haggar, who creates huge "ro-beasts" to terrorize the Arusian people.[3] Despite being the first of the two robots to appear on American television, the "GoLion" version of Voltron was regarded as "Voltron III" within the storyline because, within the original planned three-Voltron continuity, Arus was the furthest setting from Earth's side of the universe ("Voltron I" being intended for the Near Universe, and "Voltron II" being intended for the Middle Universe).[4]

The series' content is actually translated and edited from two Japanese anime series, Beast King GoLion (Lion Force episodes) and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV (Vehicle Force episodes). The Japanese source material endured much editing in the conversion to its American incarnation. Besides making changes to unify the two originally unrelated series into a common universe, edits were made to comply with US children's television standards which prohibited scenes of death, religious references, and gratuitous violence. In addition, further edits removed any cultural indicators of the show's Japanese origin, as WEP thought this would hinder American children's' reception of the show. As this Japanese origin made it very difficult to include the sort of lesson-themed episodes or post-episode moral/education shorts common to many other American cartoons of the 1980s, the writers would occasionally work a very brief scientific lesson into an episode whenever it was relevant.

Though the Japanese source series were all unrelated, creative editing and writing would portray all Voltron incarnations as coexisting within the same universe. Distributed as a single show, when the episodes of one Voltron incarnation were exhausted, the next would begin. This allowed Voltron to be marketed as a single show with a minimum of repeats over a year.

Thousands of years ago, Voltron was created through a combination of science and magic. However, the witch Haggar cast a spell that split Voltron into five robotic lions, removing its sentience in the process. Each lion embodies an element: water (Blue Lion), land (Yellow Lion), fire (Red Lion), sky (Black Lion), and forest (Green Lion). Voltron defends the universe with the five Paladins piloting it.

In order to stop the Galra Empire, Coran and Allura agreed with the second-in-command, Sven Holgersson, and the others to reform the universe defending team with Voltron, but before they could, Keith asked where the lions were and Coran explained their location to the team. With that, the five explorers set out in order to find the five lions. The new team was formed as they were given new equipment to find the lions, and eventually after some time, they find the lions and defeat a robeast, a robot constructed by the Galra Empire, through forming Voltron for the first time.

After the robeast is defeated, they dedicated themselves to becoming the new defenders of the universe, the Voltron Force. The five pilots consisted of Keith Kogane, Sven Holgersson, the hot-headed ace flier Lance McClain, the muscle Tsuyoshi "Hunk" Garrett, and the young genius Darrell "Pidge" Stoker. After Sven's death/incapacitation (depending on the dub), he is replaced by the Altean Princess, Allura.
