So, would anyone here recommend that I buy voice translator? Last month, I briefly tested one in a store and saw no typing is involved; rather, the device is voice activated. A person speaks directly into the device and then the device automatically provides an audio translation. In theory, the speed of the device appealed to me as I hate to take up too much other people's time.

In the real world, how accurate are pocket audio translators? And by using one, how likely am I to irritate a native more than if I write questions via Google Translate or point to guidebook phrases? Anyone here know about these devices?

Don't sweat it, when on the tourist trail anyone who wants your money will speak english. Speaking only english won't be a hardship. While I do have the Google translate app in installed on my phone, I've never once come across any situation that needed use of the voice translate feature. Occasionally I will use the photo feature to translate restaurant menus or labels at the supermarket, but that's the extent of it. Just learn the local greetings and you are good to go.

The BIG question is ----- Where are you going?? Unless you going somewhere way off the beaten path, having a voice translator is pretty goofy. This isn't a StarWar episode of first encounter. I think you are going to look pretty silly have a local speak into your translator. Save your money. It is not worth it.

Most speak enough English in service Industry situations (where you will have the most contact) as a lingua franca or neutral language to conduct business from constant contact with tourists from emerging markets like China.

I could have used a Scottish (not Celtic) to English translator when visiting Scotland given the language problems I had. But seriously, to pick up a Scottish lilt and translate to French is some impressive programming.

Hey, recently started using Skype again for purposes talking to friends abroad. My question would be: I only want my text to be translated, not also my voice. Did skype finally decide to add a toggle button or is there something that has been mentioned about this problem? Or is there a way to turn off the voice?

I wanted to use this for videos running on my PC so I enabled stereo mix in my PC and it worked. It is a little hard when a viewer comes in that speaks/writes in a different language than the streamer. The streamer then has to take their time to go to google and see if they can translate the chat. And most of the time it isn't something civil.

A word translator that would translate voice into a chosen language. The streamer could have the option of adding an extension to their stream that would allow a viewer to select a language to hear their voice and speaking in. Example: Streamer speaks Spanish, but the viewer only knows English. The viewer could click on the translate button to reveal a list of different languages to translate the streamers voice into. This way the viewer now can watch and listen but also understand the streamer.

Hello, it would be great to have a button in the chat that would allow you to switch the chat language how is it done in google chrome extension. And if I, for example, go to a streamer speaking in another language, and turn on this function, I will be able to see the messages in my own language or some selected language, and if I write a message in my own language, then my message will automatically be translated into the broadcast language. I often watch videos in several languages, but I barely speak them. Are you working, or do you know any system that allows (as youtube does) a simultaneous translation of voice to subtitles in another language?

When i create a voice translator app using Taifun speech recogoizer and Google translate extension ( link provided by anke ) when i translate from Hindi to English it works correctly but

When i translate English to Hindi it doesn't translate instead it shows a result of : -12303292

This is crazy because when i say "my name is Vijay " it translates it to Hindi and show results = -12303292
