The Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (VLSI Design) program (available both on-campus and online via DEN@Viterbi) is an area of emphasis for the electrical engineering student interested in the current and expanding field of VLSI circuit design.

USC began teaching electrical engineering more than a century ago, when the field was widely considered a subset of physics. Today, our work is vitally important and critical to the advancement of the information age.

Electric is a sophisticated electrical CAD system that can handle many forms of circuit design, including custom IC layout (ASICs), schematic drawing, hardware description language specifications, and electro-mechanical hybrid layout.

This travel fund was established by a Department of Electrical Engineering alum to provide support for international graduate students in electrical engineering participating in unfunded research activities for their travel to research-related conferences and symposia. The department will broadcast a call for applications on an annual basis or as additional funds become available. For consideration of an award, international graduate students requiring travel support should coordinate with their thesis/dissertation advisor to complete an application form. Each application will be evaluated for an award by the departmental Graduate Studies Committee. Number and size of awards will vary based on available funds. Preference will be given to students who have not been awarded this support in the past.

Through the examples, exercises, educational Java applets, and labs this course covers the electrical and optical properties of materials and nanostructures, chemically-directed assembly of nanostructures, biomolecules, traditional and nontraditional methods of nanolithography, heterostructures, nanotubes, resonant-tunneling diodes, transistors, single-electron transfer devices, nano-electromechanical systems, and more.

This course introduces a specific type of electric power system, the microgrid. With ongoing deregulation of the electrical utility industry and emergence of more renewable smaller generation sources advancement into the electrical power industry will be met by microgrids. The components of a microgrid allow for modular production, distribution and storage of electricity. Topics will include a historical global perspective of electrical systems, individual enabling technologies that comprise a microgrid will be presented. The class involves a design of a microgrid that incorporates and considers economic, environmental, sustainable, manufacturable, ethical, health and safety, social and political constraints.

Topics include introduction to high-voltage engineering; generation of high voltages (AC, DC, impulse, pulse); measurements of high voltages; destructive and nondestructive insulation test techniques; shielding and grounding; electric shock and safety. Paper in a related high-voltage area and an in-class presentation required.

Surveys the field of modern energy systems, with the foundation being classical electrical power and related power electronics. Topics include complex power, per unit analysis, transmission line parameters and modeling, and compensation. Students also study alternative energy systems in this course. Course also includes use of a Power Simulation Program in which modeling can be done. This program is also used for the final system design project paper which accounts for 50% of the course grade.

The first part of this course will cover synthesis methods of semiconductor and related materials. The focus will then shift to characterization of such materials. Numerous characterization methods will be introduced, most or all of which will fall under the following four categories: microscopy, optical spectroscopy, electron spectroscopy, electrical measurements.

Our courses are diverse and range from nuclear-electric energy to fiber optics to networks to power generation, and beyond. We have strong ties to the Biomedical Engineering (BME) program at UB and many BME courses are cross listed in EE. Also, we allow up to 4 courses to be taken in the departments of Computer Engineering and Computer Science.

Interconnections between electrical and systems engineering are creating a fresh vision of knowledge, its uses, and its users. The M.S.E. Program in Electrical Engineering gives students the theoretical foundation and the interdisciplinary skills needed to deal with the new ideas and new applications that are the hallmarks of modern electroscience. A major advantage of our M.S.E. Program allows you to tailor your education to your own interests and goals, from Electromagnetics and Photonics, sensors and MEMS to VLSI and Nanotechnology.

This new degree allows students to determine a flexible mix of coursework in electrical and computer engineering, engineering from related fields, physical sciences, and computer science to meet their educational and career goals. Pursue graduate study in electrical energy systems, robotics, signal and image processing, communications, embedded systems, electro-magnetics, optics, and photonics. Learn the connections between hardware, software, and the physical world. Explore the convergence of electrical engineering and computer engineering.

The research programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering cover a wide spectrum of activities in the primary disciplines of computing and communications; energy systems; intelligent systems; and photonics, electronics and quantum systems. Within these areas, there are many specialized research laboratories supporting activities in high performance computing, sensor networks, computer vision, machine learning, cybersecurity, bioelectronics, ion beam processing, VLSI design, MEMS, electric vehicles, renewable energy, smart grids, and more.

Energy systems research focuses on the generation and management of power in both traditional electrical systems as well as modern applications of renewable energy. Examples include electric vehicles, energy storage, microgrids, power systems automation and optimization, and smart grids. Design problems span everything from individual electric machines to vast interconnected power generation and distribution systems. Students of this area are recruited in all industries related to energy including electrical, nuclear, wind, solar, and hydroelectric power.

The Electrical Engineering program provides students with knowledge of basic and advanced topics in the areas of design and analysis of VLSI and electronic circuits, design and analysis of computer architecture, microprocessors, communication systems, signal processing, and control systems. Through this program students develop an ability to apply design and analysis knowledge to the practice of electrical engineering in an effective and professional manner. This knowledge can be applied to various engineering practices in aerospace, computer, electrical, electronics and other applied fields. The Master of Science program in Electrical Engineering is intended to provide advanced knowledge and competency in the theory and practice of electrical engineering. The program prepares students to pursue a wide range of professional engineering activities in the areas of:

Design and analysis are key components of the Computer Engineering program. As students advance, they move into circuit analysis and design, digital design, computer programming, data structures, microprocessor design, and computer organization. With this strong knowledge base students are able to take advanced classes across the disciplines of computer engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science for example: VLSI design, computer networks, computer architecture, and image processing.

We develop the image processing and computer vision methods along with the computational systems that allow these machines to navigate their environment as well as the speech and natural language processing techniques required for robots to interact with people. Here at Tufts, design and analysis are key components of our program. Students may study a wide variety of topics including electric machines, semiconductor integrated circuits, VLSI design, biomedical engineering, microwaves and telecommunications, antennas and antenna systems, optical electronics, lasers, Fourier optics, fiber optics, digital image processing, semiconductor and optoelectronics materials, signal processing, switching circuit design, computer architecture, parallel processing, computer systems, and multimedia arts.

Doctoral candidates in electrical and computer engineering focus on research and education in a wide variety of sub-disciplines, ranging from image and signal processing to nanoscale engineering and systems architecture.

The Human-Robot Interaction PhD program is interdisciplinary and seeks to understand and improve all aspects of interactions between humans and robots. The program draws on expertise from computer science and mechanical and electrical engineering, as well as psychology, philosophy, anthropology, and legal fields, among various others. 2351a5e196
