This java script i found from a basic google search kind of helped, but the script only downloaded the first 5 pages in very weird portrait sheet format. I dont know any java so maybe if someone could help edit this one to work better, it might fix it. Broke college student here, any help is appreciated.

Our teacher uploaded some view-only documents to google drive, and I'm trying to find a way to download them. They are google doc files for reference. I tried the method outlined in the comments of this post: _a_view_only_google_drive_pdf_file/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

You may find that when you are opening files, they open as read-only. Read-only means you can only view or print. In some cases, this is for added security, such as when you are opening files from the internet, and other times, it can be due to a setting that can be changed. Here are some scenarios where a file opens read-only and some steps you can take to change that.

Some antivirus programs may protect you from potentially unsafe files by opening them read-only. You may need to check with your antivirus provider to learn how to adjust these settings. BitDefender, for example, has content on adding application exclusions here: How to add application or process exclusions in Bitdefender Control Center.

Files from the Internet and from other potentially unsafe locations can contain viruses, worms, or other kinds of malware that can harm your computer. This is also commonly the case with email attachments or files you've downloaded. To help protect your computer, files from these potentially unsafe locations are opened in Protected View. By using Protected View, you can read a file and see its contents while reducing the risks. For more information on Protected View and how to change settings, see this article: What is Protected View?

My computer has a 525GB SSD and a 2TB Western Digital HDD. I have a 147GB partition running Windows 10 and a 367GB partition running Ubuntu 16.10. The SSD is running completely fine, but the 2TB drive sometimes mounts as Read Only. This seems to only happen when I have previously booted into Windows. Restarting into Ubuntu, no matter how many times I do it, does not fix the issue. If I reboot into Windows, however, and then back into Ubuntu, the issue resolves itself. This is not an ideal fix, and I would like a way to have the drive mount properly. I should also note that I have to click on the drive from the Unity task bar in order to mount it, as it does not automatically do so on login.

I've read a few things online (though they were just for general troubleshooting of a drive mounting as read only) and the general consensus is to either run chown or to try remounting. However neither of these solutions have worked for me. I've tried a few other miscellaneous things to try and fix the drive but nothing has worked.

I have a 1.5TB USB drive with many important files that I want to give to a friend (they have Windows7) for reading only purposes. thumbscrew appears to flip a registry switch but it seems to be on the local pc only.

So As I understand, you want to provide your friend hole drive but your friend need part of them? Or you want to provide disk "with many important files" to your friend to get him/her access to hole 1.5 Tb content? Its a life, a lot of examples around, are you 100% guarantee your friend will be "your friend" for all entire life? Nothing personal, But just want prevent wrong steps...I do advise you to protect your info with something like that -protect-software.com/protect-folders.htmlBut its only my IMHO

Making a USB stick read only is done at the controller firmware level. From what I know, there is no USB hard drive which has the feature for read-only at the firmware/controller level. Like Jason said above, Nexcopy has the ability to make read-only USB sticks, but not USB hard drives.

ok both NTFS partitions are mounted in read-only mode. Could be because the filesystem is in a dirty state, a hibernation file is there or fastboot was not disabled on windows. Linux have just minimal tools to solve this, but nothing like CHKDSK from Windows. If no windows available, then try this:

The files in your Google Drive are private by default and only the owner has initial permissions to view, edit or delete their files. If you choose to share a file with other people, you can decide whether others have read-only access to your files or if they are allowed to edit and comment on your files.

You may be eligible for a drive-only license if you have the formal documents required by the drive-only license document checklist (English version PDF | Spanish version PDF ), cannot establish your legal presence in the United States and may not have a social security number.

U.S. citizens, documented immigrants, and non-immigrants including B-1 and B-2 visitors with unexpired U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) documents are not eligible for the drive-only license.

You can limit the amount of time that a collaborator has access to your document. This option is only available for commenters and viewers of your document. To set an expiration, hover your mouse next to the share settings changes and click the stopwatch icon that will appear.

Permissions are categorized as list permissions, site permissions, and personal permissions, depending on the objects to which they can be applied. For example, site permissions apply to a particular site, list permissions apply only to lists and libraries, and personal permissions apply only to certain objects, such as personal views and private Web Parts. The following tables describe what each permission is used for, the dependent permissions, and the permission levels in which it's included.

I updated to the new desktop version of Dropbox, and in re-syncing my files, it completely maxed out my hard drive! Previously my hard drive was only about 25% full, as most of my files were stored Online Only. After the update, the finder displays they are STILL Online Only, but my disk is completely full, so Dropbox will no longer continue to sync. And I cant save anything on my computer because the disk is full. This update royally screwed my machine and I need to work.

Please help?!

My housemate was able to remove the files through the Terminal, and then I did a system re-install.

I uninstalled Dropbox and removed all Dropbox items from my machine. BUT the system was still writing over 3000 functions per second back-and-forth to my hard drive. This was caused by Dropbox. After rebooting a few times in Safe Mode, this behavior finally stopped. I re-installed Dropbox but NOT The new update.

On this page, we'll focus on the disk read-only fix. To change a hard drive from ready only, i.e., to make a hard drive not read-only, the troubleshooting methods are quite the same as that of removing write protection from a hard drive, USB flash drive, pen drive or SD card.

"I'm trying to figure out why my D drive is read-only after updating to Windows 10. It is a separate hard drive and not a partition of another hard drive. I can open everything but just can't modify them."

The hard drive coming with a read-only status suggests that you can't change what is on it. i.e. once the data is written on it, you can read it but can't do any other operation on it. This happens to HDD a lot, and it's also commonly seen on removable disks like SD memory card, and USB flash drive.

When USB hard drives, pen drive, floppy disk, SD card, and external hard disks contain un-supported file system types on a Windows computer or a Mac, the device will also shows read-only. So in this case, you can fix such read-only problem on a disk by converting the incompatible file system to a recognized file system by Windows, Steam, or a certain device.

Devices and media are often characterized as read-only mode, which actually can be changed to read-write by the user for further usage. When a drive has become locked in a read-only state, try to fix the read-only error using the Diskpart cmd with the following simple instruction.

If you don't consider yourself a pro-computer user and you're not familiar with command-lines, don't worry. There are graphical-based solutions to help you remove write-protection from your hard drives, USB drives, and even SD cards.

*Editing Windows Registry indeed helps remove write protection and read-only from your storage device. However, we found that it's usually effective on earlier Windows operating systems, including Windows XP and Windows Vista.

I'm trying to format a usb flash drive using various tools but they all say that it's a read-only file system. The drive is not mounted and I'm running as root. If I try to mount the drive like so with the command

I don't get any errors and when I go to /media/myflashdrive I can see and edit all the files (only as root however). However, any changes are not persistent. For example, if I delete any files or run

I've tried this on other computers and even in Windows but nothing can put a scratch on it. I heard something about there being a certain bit in the first sector which can be flipped to make a drive read-only but I think it only applied to Windows.

Hmm. I wasn't very clear: my drive was usable originally but it stopped working while I was using Windows (I just plugged it in one day and it was read-only) and now that I use Linux I thought I'd try to fix it (I have been told that linux can do anything but I'm not so sure). I suppose it could just be a physical error on the drive but it's not got any marks or anything. ff782bc1db
