In the 28th century, cooperation between the Earth and extraterrestrial species has expanded the former International Space Station to the point its mass threatens to cause gravitational disruption to Earth itself. A police division was created by the United Human Federation to preserve peace throughout the galaxy, and amongst its staff are Valerian and his partner Laureline.

Eventually, Valerian and Laureline discover that there's a connection between Valerian's vision and the threat. Worse, they discover that there's a huge cover-up -- and it goes all the way to the top.

In the 28th century, the former International Space Station reached critical mass, making it too dangerous to keep in low Earth orbit. Relocated to deep space, it became Alpha, a space-traveling city inhabited by millions of creatures from thousands of planets. A special police division was created to preserve peace through the galaxy, including happy-go-lucky Major Valerian and his partner, no-nonsense Sergeant Laureline.

To be completely honest, there were instances of both. I think the 3D aspect especially was the biggest culprit. Sometimes everything would look absolutely stunning and other times, like when they showed Alpha, the city of a thousand planets, the image got a bit muddled, which in turn gave me a bit of a headache (or it might have been my contacts). The rest of the features, however, were like a cherry on top of an already entertaining cake of a film.

The main plotline of the film follows special ops Valerian, played by Dane DeHaan, and Laureline, played by Cara Delevinge. Their mission: maintain law and order on the ever expanding Alpha, the city of a thousand planets. Alpha is attacked by an unknown evil and Valerian and Laureline must save the day.

A dark force threatens Alpha, a vast metropolis and home to species from a thousand planets. Special operatives Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.

At the onset, I was pretty on board with this film. Beginning only a few years into our future, we see space stations forming together in orbit around Earth, with peoples from two different nations shaking hands in celebration of this union. What follows is a montage of further and further points in history with humanity shaking hands with new and strange species from across the galaxy, adding themselves to this ever-growing conglomerate of worlds. This concludes with the station so large that it must propel itself from the orbit of Earth to parts unknown in the galaxy, lest it threaten to crash into the planet. Thus Alpha, the titular city of a thousand planets as we come to know it, is born. I liked this setup for its quirky simplicity. The story is set in the 28th century, and while there is a lot of history left unsaid, I found it a nicely concise way to establish what becomes the setting for much of the film.

The delights keep rolling for awhile. Valerian and Laureline proceed to Alpha, the free-floating space station that houses people from a thousand planets. Alpha is the most original spaceship since Dark City, but calling it just a spaceship is an artistic injustice.
