The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) approved the updated vaccines by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna in mid-September. (In early October, they also authorized an updated Novavax vaccine for use in individuals 12 and older; more on that below.)

The updated vaccines are not expected to prevent all cases of COVID, including those causing mild illness; rather, their aim is to reduce severe illness, hospitalization, and death from infection. According to the CDC, COVID is still a major cause of serious respiratory illness, with more than 200,000 reported deaths since January 2022. That figure includes more than 600 deaths in adolescents and children ages 19 and younger.

COVID vaccines are safe and effective, according to the CDC. The safety of COVID vaccines has been rigorously monitored and evaluated since their emergency use authorization (EUA) in December 2020. The updated mRNA COVID vaccines for 2023-2024 are manufactured using a similar process to the previous vaccines.

The FDA authorized an updated version of a vaccine Novavax developed to target the XBB.1.5 strain. Individuals 12 and older previously vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine (and who have not already been vaccinated with a recently updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccine) are eligible to receive one dose; unvaccinated individuals can receive two doses.

People 5 years and older may get one dose of the updated vaccine at least two months after the last dose of any previous COVID vaccine. Babies and young children usually need more doses than older children and teens. Anyone who recently had COVID-19 may consider delaying their vaccine by 3 months.

The Nutrition Facts label on packaged foods was updated in 2016 to reflect updated scientific information, including information about the link between diet and chronic diseases, such as obesity and heart disease. The updated label makes it easier for consumers to make better informed food choices. The updated label appears on the majority of food packages. Manufacturers with $10 million or more in annual sales were required to update their labels by January 1, 2020; manufacturers with less than $10 million in annual food sales were required to update their labels by January 1, 2021. Manufacturers of most single-ingredient sugars, such as honey and maple syrup, and certain cranberry products had until July 1, 2021 to make the changes.

The previous label was more than 20 years old when the changes were made. To make sure consumers have access to more recent and accurate nutrition information about the foods they are eating, FDA required changes based on updated scientific information, new nutrition and public health research, more recent dietary recommendations from expert groups, and input from the public.

Some serving sizes will increase and others will decrease because by law, the serving sizes must be based on the amounts of food and drink that people typically consume, not on how much they should consume. Recent food consumption data show that some serving sizes need to be revised. For example, the reference amount used to set a serving of ice cream was previously  cup and now is 2/3 cup. The reference amount used to set a serving size of soda was previously 8 ounces and now is 12 ounces. The reference amount for yogurt decreased from 8 ounces to 6 ounces. Nutrient information on the new label will be based on these updated serving sizes so it matches what people actually consume.

There was great interest in the databases of standardized citation metrics across all scientists and scientific disciplines [1], and many scientists urged us to provide updates of the databases. Accordingly, we have provided updated analyses that use citations from Scopus with data freeze as of May 6, 2020, assessing scientists for career-long citation impact up until the end of 2019 (Table-S6-career-2019) and for citation impact during the single calendar year 2019 (Table-S7-singleyr-2019). Updated databases and code are freely available in Mendeley ( ). The original database (version 1) can also be found in , the updated (version 2) can also be found in , and any subsequent updates that might appear in the future will be generally accessible in

In the proposed rule, EPA presents updated noncancer toxicity values based on evaluating additional scientific information. These updated values are different from those used to calculate the 2022 interim HAs, which EPA based on the best available science at that time. EPA is accepting public comments on its proposed NPDWR, including on the proposed maximum contaminant level goals (MCLGs), other supporting information, and the draft 2023 toxicity values for PFOA and PFOS which are based on the best available science. Note that the MCLGs in the proposed rule are zero. 17dc91bb1f
