So I'm new to emulation and retro arch and I'm wanting to add SNES roms and Super Famicom roms. I've been following a great tutorial to setup Retroarch and that is done but I'm a little unsure how to proceed. I have been directed to another great launchbox video on how to run SNES through Retroarch. It explains how to add multiple file types but my concern is that all my Famicom files are 7z and my SNES files are mostly Zip and a few are .srm and .src. One of the moderators told me that some emulators will run archived roms and others need to be unzipped. So I'm confused as to what to select when adding a system, in fact is there a list of systems that can be run as archived files and a list of what roms need extracting within retroarch?

First 7z or zip doesn't matter, both file types are recognized and handled just fine with 7zip which Launchbox uses to extract the rom files. The only time there may be a problem is if there are multiple files within the archive file, the first file will try and be loaded and if this first file is not an actual rom it may cause problems.

Emulators that directly run archived roms will be things like Mame, NeoGeo and some other arcade emulators where the rom archive contains several rom files and these should never be extracted, the emulator needs them to remain archived.

I assume some systems are archived to save disk space? So if we use Retroarch as an example, if files are present that are archived in most cases they don't need to be extracted to run? What is the reasoning behind extracting a file before running, than just leaving it alone. I'm just curious.

If you are loading a rom through through Retroarch and it is a zip / 7z file it will need to be extracted first. Launchbox will extract it to a temporary folder first, then load it and delete the temporary file after playing, all leaving the original compressed file alone. I believe Retroarch does the same thing as Launchbox but again I cannot say for sure since I have always extracted my files out.

How do i go about scanning iso files for viruses. I had zip files and i unzipped them and it came up with an iso file. I scanned with both microsoft security essential and malwarebytes free and nothing came up.

I am especially good at Donkey Kong 3. So far I have been practicing at 1980-arcadegames.com But this can be frustrating since there is no sound with the game. I was wondering how to download M.A.M.E. in order to play Donkey Kong 3. Try to explain this as you would to a 5 year old please. Because most likely a 5 year old has more of a clue than I do.

On the next screen, under "Emulateurs" choose Windows. There will be several links; scroll down until you see MAMEUI32v0.136 (or something similar). Click on Telecharger and save it to your arcade folder. Now go in the folder and double click on the .exe file. Choose run. It will make a new folder inside your "arcade" folder, next to the .exe file. Inside that new folder is all sorts of goodies: folders for background files, artwork files, snapshots, a whole lot of other files, and best of all, roms. The roms are your game files; planetemu.net has these too. Also in the new folder is MAMEUI32.exe. Double click on it and you get a big, splashy menu. Here's where you play your games from. At the top click on Options, then Directories. Here's where you choose what folder you want MAMEUI32 to find your games (roms), your snapshots, artwork files, etc. Once you have your roms from planetemu.net and have told MAMEUI32 where they are you can play them by going through the list and double-clicking on the game. A new screen opens up (full screen by default, you can put it in a window through options/default game options). You'll see a couple screens of varying info about the game. Follow the directions on the screen to get through them and to the boot-up screen. Hit the tab key on your keyboard to open up a new menu. You can set up the controls for your game here. You can also set amount of lives, difficulty, etc. through the dipswitches.

Basically what retrorussell said. I would add that if you want all the roms, or a whole lot of them, save yourself a lot of trouble and just google for mameburners. It's a list of people who will burn the current MAME rom set for you for just the cost of disks and shipping. Cheap, easy, hassle-free, and then you'll have them all instead of scraping all over for good torrents.

OK, you lost me. I downloaded the MAME, but you failed to tell me where I am supposed to download the rom? I put it in the folder ROMS, and nothing happened. I tried putting the ROMS in the Megaman icon and that did nothing. Everytime I click on Megaman icon it gives me a list of games. I go to Donkey Kong 3 and then it says error and gives an error of roms I am missing. I tried downloading the Donkey Kong 3 rom from this site but I could not find any game rom so I just google Donkey Kong 3 MAME rom and found a site that had it. I put all the roms in the Arcade folder, I even put them in the rom folder, and zip, zilch, nada. What am I doing wrong?

In the preferences or setup or whatever it's called, make sure the ROMs is pointed to your ROMs directory. If the current version still has that.. I haven't tried the newest one. If that's not it, there must be something we're not seeing about the way you have it set up, because it's really quite dead simple... put all the files in the approprate folders and it should just work... unless you have a corrupt rom or something? Or the incorrect version of rom. That is sometimes an issue with MAME. You will get a new MAME exe, then some of your ROMs will no longer work and need to be updated. Try some other ROMs (different game) as well, to try to eliminate that as a possibility. I think there's some PD ones on the mame.net website that should work for sure.

Look at the group for DK3. If you only download "DK3 (Japan)" it will not run. It is dependent on "DK3 (US)" so therefore you would need to download and copy both of those ROMs if you wanted to run the Japan version of DK3.

OK, I am not getting it. Let it be known I have no idea what the significance of a zipped or an unzipped is. It's all Greek to me. OK, here is a more detailed description. I clicked on Megaman guy. I see the Donkey Kong 3 (US) name. Buy the name is a red question mark on something that is either a folder? or a laptop symbol. I click twice on the Donkey Kong 3 (US) name. Then for about 3 seconds I get a black screen which is quickly followed by this message.

Here is the thing, I have the roms. I see the titles of all of the supposed missing roms. I have tried to put these roms every where to no avail. I tried putting the roms in Megaman Icon, nada, I tried putting them in the rom folder, nada, I tried putting Megaman Icon in the Rom folder, nada. I tried putting the roms in the part where it says Donkey Kong 3, nada, I even tried putting the roms in the part where it says error files not found, nada. I don't get it. Please give me a step, by step outline. And I mean step by step. If you are presuming I understand the simplist concept so you can not mention it, then you are sadly mistaken. I my friends am extremely computer illitirate when it comes to downloading and using files. I don't download songs. I don't download anything unless the computer completely does it for me. I barely can get the Atari 2600 emulator to work, and I have not done that in a very long time

You know what, forget it. It is just not happening for me. If anyone knows of a site that actually had the arcade game Donkey Kong 3 with sound without having to download, and save off the internet, it would be greatly appreciated. Also it is not 1980-arcadegames.com. The site I go to is 1980-games.com I would not even be posting here if there was sound to the game, but there is not for the game when I play on that site.
