By following these steps and considering potential consequences, you can successfully uninstall Microsoft Edge from your Windows 10 computer. Be careful while executing the commands and make informed decisions when removing this built-in web browser.

Microsoft Edge reinstalled itself and now the "Add or remove programs" feature in Windows will not let me uninstall it. How do I uninstall it and prevent it from reinstalling itself? Same for MS Office?

One of the most common questions we get about Microsoft Edge is how to uninstall it. Microsoft makes it impossible to permanently uninstall Microsoft Edge on Windows, and some methods that have worked in the past are now ineffective due to regular Windows updates. Thankfully, there are still methods to uninstall Edge in 2023.

Microsoft has purposely made it harder to uninstall Microsoft Edge. Removing Microsoft Edge from your PC is not that easy. However, there are several ways to do it. You can uninstall Edge from the Start menu which will remove it from the Taskbar. The standard Windows uninstall option or Windows PowerShell are other methods to uninstall Microsoft Edge. You can prevent Edge from being reinstalled through a Windows update manually or by using a Blocker Toolkit. We will show you how to set this up.

Several browsers such as Firefox or Opera GX can be installed by the user. Microsoft Edge, on the other hand, is the default web browser that comes pre-installed with Windows. Uninstalling Microsoft Edge is more difficult than you might expect. However, there are several ways to remove the browser from your computer. But before you get started, keep in mind that it is generally not recommended to uninstall Edge as this app is deeply integrated into the system.

Successfully removing Microsoft Edge may depend on which version is installed on your computer. The two version are known as Chromium and Legacy. There are several options to complete the uninstallation, which we will present to you below.

Get-AppxPackage edge | Remove-AppxPackage no longer works in Windows 10 since RTM. It throws an error describing that it is part of the operating system and only an administrator can remove it. But even an administrator can't remove it. It also mentions turning it off via Optional Features, but it's no longer exposed through Optional Features, nor through PowerShell (Get-WindowsOptionalFeatures). They really don't want you to disable it.

As has been mentioned, Windows PowerShell is no longer capable of removing Edge. However, there is a tool that (as of Windows 10 version 1709, build 16299) still can: wim_tweak. This is a tool that interfaces with the Windows package system and image files. After downloading the tool, the following script will uninstall Edge:

1Ironically, for this method to work, you must have Edge installed.

So if you somehow already uninstalled it, the very first step is toreinstall Edge.

Unfortunately, I haven't found a way to prevent the annoying messageThis app can't open fromoccurring every time I wake my laptop from sleep. For the time being, I'll just have to live with that.(Pressing Enter makes it go away.)

I've previously posted this solution, and this one.

Each of those solutions worked fine at the time when I posted them(at least for me).

None of them work afterI made an in-place upgrade of Windows 10.

I'm not the only one to fail uninstalling Edge, as testified bythis question (solved but not accepted),this (accepted but not solved), this, this, and this.

Now right-click Microsoft Edge and then Change.Expect to see the message :

An error occurred while trying to uninstall Microsoft Edge.It may have already been uninstalled.Would you like to remove Microsoft Edge from the Programs and Featureslist?

1If you don't delete the folder C:\programs\MicrosoftEdge\Edge, thenyou can still start it :

Press WinKey+e, Alt+d,copy-paste C:\programs\MicrosoftEdge\Edge\Application\msedge.exe,and hit Enter.

The major difference is that it now runs on your terms, not onMicrosoft's.

And it now behaves more like any other average-Joe chromium browser.

Interestingly, The Register pointed out that other companies have made their EU-mandated changes "universal across all their products." Microsoft, on the other hand, is geo-gating users' ability to uninstall Edge.

Microsoft began rolling out its Chromium version of Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 a few years ago, but because Edge is installed automatically, there's no option for uninstalling it or reverting back to the legacy version.

I use Firefox. On my win 8.1 desktop both IE 11 and Edge show as using a lot of memory in task mgr, but, neither works. Edge comes up with a blank page, IE 11 comes up showing all but will not download any web page at all since I unfortunately installed Edge with win update. Will re-check Turn Windows Features on or off and see what is there. Thanks for the suggestion. Still concerned that If I delete Edge from 8.1 that it might mess up something else. I then deleted the KB4567409 and today when it said that the update was available I hide it. When I first tried to uninstall the system went crazy and the edge.exe file kept trying to load and reload started getting messages that my memory was really low and I got a blank screen. rebooted and uninstalled thru windows uninstall. Computer is currently working just fine and IE 11 is now working too, but, very very slow. I will stick to Firefox. As I said in my earlier Post, MS's new Edge is the "Flagship" and the first version of Edge is not to be supported.

IE is still in use but MS consider Edge to be better and hence the endeavour to get Windows users to use the "newest" browser.

MS would also prefer users to update from W8/8.1 to W10 so this may your next problem. retiredlearner,#62021/03/06Patrick LeblancNew MemberJoined:2021/03/06Messages:3Likes Received:0 have u tried to go into old configuration panel and reset Internet Explorer options back to defaults? and in revo u need to uninstall a windows apps or modern as they being called nowaday... cause it's managed by a user called trusted-installer on windows even if 7/8/8.1 or 10... but better use a tweaker to get rid of edge cause it stopped all the service microsoft edge runs in the background... so u can use any web browser u'd like... search for that on the net... but yeah u can get rid of edge without affecting the fact u could still be able to update your system... and won't get bothered by microsoft... and the use of their apps... but i'll try first to go into the old configuration panel and check to reset my internet explorer 11 settings or even reset them back to their defaults... but yeah without troubles u can get rid of edge and boycott microsoft and their apps... without doing damages to your computer... doubt it's the update KB###### messing things up in your system... After uninstalling Edge, IE 11 started working again(but too slow). Still don't understand why the KB###### to install Edge did not install it properly to begin with? And, when I tried to reinstall it again the installation just hung up. Since I really don't use it glad I was able to get rid of it. Would have preferred Revo because it gets rid of more stuff than the windows uninstaller. Would like to reset IE 11 but where is the old configuration panel? thanks again!
