I'm trying to find a pinyin input method for traditional chinese that works on Ubuntu 20.04. A lot of similar questions on askubuntu are from around 9 years ago, and the answers no longer seem to fully apply.

If I go to the language support panel and use Ibus as my input method system, the Chinese options available are either for China (simplified) or Hong Kong (traditional). When adding input methods in the Region and Language menu, China's version (i.e., simplified chinese) has intelligent pinyin which seems to work fine, but it's for simplified chinese, and the Hong Kong (traditional) version does not list intelligent pinyin as an input method. The other methods seem to either not function or not be pinyin.

I tried switching from Ibus to fcitx, and added input methods using fcitx-configtool. However, the pinyin options I found were either simplified (with google's input method), or they didn't work. Is there a way to get google's pinyin input to support traditional characters? Does fcitx have a working traditional pinyin input method? Any help would be appreciated.

I haven't updated the Google input apps in my old Android for a long time. Back then I can use pinyin input and output Traditional Chinese characters. But I can't in my new phone. I'm not sure if I am missing some steps to allow this to happen.

After I have installed the fcitx5 Chinese input method add-on and have done some basic setup for its pinyin module, I noticed that the pinyin input method outputs Traditional Chinese characters for some words instead of Simplified Chinese. The ibus-libpinyin doesn't have this problem and outputs Simplified Chinese characters all the time.

The tone-marking diacritics are commonly omitted in popular news stories and even in scholarly works, as well as in the traditional Mainland Chinese Braille system, which is similar to pinyin, but meant for blind readers.[51] This results in some degree of ambiguity as to which words are being represented.

The advantage of using the Chinese (PRC) MSPY input method editor for traditional characters is that the "New Experience" input style is, in my humble opinion, far more sophisticated and easier to use.

But seeing as the OP is located in Taiwan, I recommend you to learn bopomofo input or get some other locally available input method. Sogou is geared towards mainland and HK users, i.e. its traditional output DOES NOT adhere to the Taiwan standard (duh, I guess, but it might be important for the OP, it certainly is for me).

The bopomofo input is not that hard to learn, they're all grouped according to phonological principles, so I suggest you give it a try. (Back in the day I had no choice, the old European Windows traditional input method was either Cangjie or Bopomofo)

Set the shortcut key after the "stroke filter" of the pinyin input method you set (the default is `)Then after entering the text, press the shortcut key, the words stroke filter will appear in the candidate box of the input method, and the words can be filtered by strokes. The specific rules are: h horizontal stroke, s vertical stroke, p left-falling stroke, n right-falling stroke, z turning stroke.

I'm a Chinese learner and know from my teacher that there is software (for Windows), which lets you strictly input withtype in pinyin with tones. E.g. hao3 becomes . The Mac OS shipped Chinese input does have pinyin input, but no tone selection, hence you input hao to get  (no tone mark). I wonder if there is any way for me to use a pinyin input with tones for Mac OS or on my ipad.

When inputting the 4 tones on Latin pinyin representations of Chinese characters, I figured that the US - Internationl layout is not sufficient. You need the ABC - Extended keyboard. After that, you can type all the 4 tones like:

Chinese text on the screen can be displayed in simplified characters or in traditional characters, and you may toggle between the two versions if necessary. When typing your responses in the Writing part of the exam, you may choose from the following three input methods: Pinyin Simplified, Pinyin Traditional, and Bopomofo. The display and input options will have no effect on your exam score.

The "ABC - Extended" keyboard is the input method you'll need to select when you want to type pinyin with tone marks. On older Mac operating systems, this may also be called the "U.S. Extended" keyboard. 2351a5e196
