"The Twist" is an American pop song written and originally released in 1958 by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters as a B-side to "Teardrops on Your Letter".[1] It was inspired by the twist dance craze. Ballard's version was a moderate hit, peaking at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1960.[2] On the US Billboard Hot R&B Sides chart, the original version of "The Twist" first peaked at number sixteen in 1959 and at number six in 1960.[3]

In late 1961 and early 1962, the twist craze belatedly caught on in high society. Sightings of celebrities doing the dance made the song a hit with adults, particularly after a report in the Cholly Knickerbocker gossip column. Soon there were long lines at the Peppermint Lounge nightclub in New York, the most popular celebrity twisting spot. This new interest made "The Twist" the first recording to hit number one on the United States charts during two separate chart runs, and marked a major turning point for adult acceptance of rock and roll music.[10]

After school Evans would entertain customers at his various jobs, including Fresh Farm Poultry in the Italian Market on Ninth Street and at the Produce Market, with songs and jokes. It was his boss at the Produce Market, "Tony A.", who gave Evans the nickname "Chubby". The owner of Fresh Farm Poultry, Henry Colt, was so impressed by the boy's performances for the customers that he, along with his colleague and friend Kal Mann, who worked as a songwriter for Cameo-Parkway Records,[6] arranged for young Chubby to do a private recording for American Bandstand host Dick Clark. At this recording session Evans got his stage name from Clark's wife, who asked Evans what his name was. "Well," he replied, "my friends call me 'Chubby'." As he had just completed a Fats Domino impression, she smiled and said, "As in Checker?" That little play on words ("chubby" relating to "Fats" just as "checkers" relates to "dominoes," a tabletop game) got an instant laugh, and stuck: from then on, Evans would use the name "Chubby Checker".[7][8]

In 2009, Checker recorded a public service announcement (PSA) for the Social Security Administration to help launch a new campaign to promote recent changes in Medicare law.[20] In the PSA, Checker encourages Americans on Medicare to apply for Extra Help, "A new 'twist' in the law makes it easier than ever to save on your prescription drug plan costs."[21][22]

"New York City, let's twist again on four wheels!" said Chubby Checker. "Groove your way through the hustle and bustle of the city and join me in the campaign to support safety by doing the New York Twist every time you exit a vehicle."

"Reaching for your car door handle with your far hand can save a life. As more and more New Yorkers continue to embrace the bike boom we've seen in recent years, it's increasingly important for drivers and passengers to 'twist again' and look for passing cyclists as they exit their vehicles," said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. "For our part, DOT will continue expanding our network of protected bike lanes, which often include a buffered space separating vehicles and cyclists to help prevent dooring."

"A pause and awareness before opening a car door can make all the difference in ensuring the safety of others on the road. The 'New York Twist' campaign takes this crucial step to the next level with a fun and memorable approach. This campaign encourages drivers and passengers to remember the importance of checking for people on bicycles, scooters, and on foot before opening car doors by adding a little twist to their routine," said Angela Azzolino, Executive Director of Get Women Cycling. "As everyday commuters, we know how important it is to promote responsible behavior and improve road safety for all. That's why we fully support this initiative and encourage everyone to get on board and take part in making our streets safe spaces for everyone."

Think about it: Before then, couples held each other when they danced. But when "American Bandstand" viewers saw Checker singing "The Twist" and noticed teen dancers dutifully twisting their torsos to the music while standing apart from each other, a national sensation was born.

It's the latest twist Checker has used to keep alive a career that began in earnest in 1960 when his cover of the Hank Ballard song, "The Twist," became a No. 1. The song rocketed to the top again in January, 1962, becoming the only tuen to hit No. 1 twice in separate years.

Since then, he's tried other twisted ways to capitalize on his fame, including a 2009 video for the Social Security Adminstration promoting how "a new 'twist' in the law makes it easier than ever to save on your prescription drug plan costs."

Attention, San Diego! Are you ready to twist again like you did last year, only this time with 1,749 of your new best friends on Tuesday at the San Diego County Fair? Then grab your dancing shoes and, um, a white shirt (more on that later), and get ready to gyrate!

"Fairgoers are invited to participate by rocking, rolling, moving, grooving, shimmying, and shaking," the press release continues. "It's a free Fair event after fairgoers enter through the admission gates." (In other words, first you buy your ticket, then you twist.) 006ab0faaa
