In fact, The Weather Company has been the world's most accurate forecaster overall every year since the study began in 2017.2

Accuracy has become increasingly paramount as people and businesses continue to monitor weather forecasts to help them make decisions, especially amid the growing volatility of weather and a changing climate. In its latest comprehensive report of forecast accuracy released today,2 Global and Regional Weather Forecast Accuracy Overview, 2017-2022, commissioned by IBM, ForecastWatch named IBM's The Weather Company as the weather forecast provider whose forecasts were more likely to be the most accurate across all geographic regions studied and time periods covered. About the Report

The report is a comprehensive weather forecast accuracy study spanning six years, 2,182 global locations across eight regions of the world, and 84 different accuracy metrics covering precipitation, temperature, cloud cover, wind and other forecast variables. ForecastWatch analyzed about 250 million forecasts from 23 different weather providers. Each provider was noted each time it finished in first place for each metric, and according to the report, The Weather Channel recorded the most first-place finishes globally for every year studied and all forecast days of all the providers compared.

The weather can influence our decisions as consumers. Cold weather could compel you to purchase a new coat, while warmer temperatures might encourage you to skip the hot tea. The influence of weather on our buying decisions can be as complicated and predictable as the weather itself.

While Winter Storm Pax approaches the Washington area, The Weather Channel has been engaged in a fierce battle with DirectTV following a contract dispute that's left 20 million Americans -- one-fifth of TWC's potential audience, according to Fortune -- without access to the leading weather news provider.

After dropping TWC in early January, DirectTV replaced it with a Colorado-based channel called WeatherNation, which lacks the production quality and professionalism of TWC, to say the least. It also appears to provide unbalanced coverage, geographically speaking, which has not gone unnoticed by D.C. lawmakers. Over the weekend, Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa took to Twitter to voice his frustration:

Many weather sites and publications recommend the monitoring of NOAA Weather Radio for real-time weather conditions. These broadcasts require a scanner or special radio receiver, but did you know your car radio might already have this feature? Many car receivers will broadcast weather alerts. Check to see if yours has a AM/FM/WB receiver option. Some car stereos, for example, include a 7-channel Weather Band tuner with NOAA weather alert. If your receiver has this weather band feature, set it to WB and choose channel 3.

The company behind The Weather Channel said Tuesday that it was disappointed that the channel was pulled while it was negotiating a contract renewal with Verizon. It said Verizon has "made it clear to us" that it doesn't want to negotiate further. It pressed FiOS customers to complain.

The Weather Channel said it was popular in February because of its live coverage of winter storms. But FiOS subscribers still have weather news options: The AccuWeather Network on one channel and the FiOS mobile app and from a WeatherBug "widget" on another channel.

And it's come back to channel lineups after being kicked off before. Last year, DirecTV brought The Weather Channel back after a three-month dispute. DirecTV also kept on the channel it picked to replace it, WeatherNation.

Social media reactions to the Tornado Week debut of the new AR broadcasting technology demonstrated that the audience was not only impressed but intrigued, with many taking guesses at how the in-studio tornado had been generated.
