Sorry if this has been asked before. Are the NY Times sudoku puzzles the same for everyone? Is there a site that offers hints or where the puzzles are discussed or solved collectively? At least for those without memberships there are one easy, medium and hard puzzle each day. It seems like the puzzles get more difficult to solve as the week progresses. Sometimes with the medium and hard puzzles I can stare at them for minutes without seeing anything, and sometimes I use logic to solve but suspect that my logic is faulty (ex. seeing hidden pairs or triples that are not actually there).

So I have learned how to solve easy and normal difficulty sudokus, but whenever I try to solve hard sudokus I get stuck at one point and I can't finish it, I don't know which technique I am missing, I have watched tutorials from cracking the cryptic and from a youtube channel called mylameanimations but I still don't understand how to solve the hard puzzles

I've been playing on sudoku.com, which I assume has randomly generated puzzles, and I don't know if it's just me or some puzzles are just not solvable without guessing, brute force trial and error, or shamefully using their hint function (lmao)

The odd-even effect in numerical processing has been explained as the easier processing of even numbers compared with odd numbers. We investigated this effect in Sudoku puzzles, a reasoning problem that uses numbers but does not require arithmetic operations. Specifically, we asked whether the odd-even effect occurred with Sudoku puzzles and whether individual differences in working memory (WM), aging, and experience with Sudoku modulated this effect. We manipulated the presence of odd and even numbers in Sudoku puzzles, measured WM with the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and backward digit span task, tested older and younger adults, and collected Sudoku experience frequency. Performance on Sudoku was more accurate for even puzzles than odd ones. Younger, experienced, and higher-WM participants were more accurate on Sudoku, but these individual difference variables did not interact with the odd-even effect. Odd numbers may impose more cognitive load than even numbers, but future research is needed to examine how age, experience, or WM may influence the odd-even effect.

I am looking for quality classic sudoku puzzles not made by a generator, that are verified to be set by humans (or at least a strong suspicion), in various difficulty levels (easy, medium, hard etc), and perhaps some specialty ones that feature particular techniques. But nothing too hard that would be punishing.

This means that unlike other approaches the algorithm runs only once and returns a sudoku configuration matching the desired difficulty (with high probability within a range or with probability=1)

Then one (after having generated a sudoku configuration) re-solves the sudoku with the human-like solver and depending on the techniques the solver used (e.g pairs, x-wing, swordfish etc.) a difficulty rate is also assigned.

The difficulty rating of the human-like techniques is very subjective. For example why x-wing is taken to be more difficult than hidden singles? (personaly have solved many difficult published sudoku puzzles manualy and never used such techniques)

Extending my previous answer, it was mentioned that for any sudoku puzzle the minimum number of clues is an objective property of the puzzle (for example for 9x9 grids the minimum number of clues for having a valid sudoku is 17)

Tests of the sudokus generated with this algorithm and difficulty rating based on the previous approaches (human-like solver), show a correlation of desired and estimated difficulty rates, plus a greater ability for generalisation to arbitrary sudoku configurations.

Then when a user requests a certain difficulty puzzle, give them a cached one from the bucket they choose. You might also want to consider swapping numbers and changing orientation of puzzles with known difficulties to generate similar puzzles with the same level of difficulty. Then repeat the above as needed when you need to refill your buckets with new puzzles.

This would be the most difficult/hard sudoku puzzle level (i.e minimum needed number of clues). Then all other difficulty levels from less hard to easy are generated by allowing more clues than the minimum amount needed.

It should be noted that sudoku difficulty levels are not standard, as explained above, one can have as many or as few difficulty levels as one wants. What is standard is the minimum number (and position) of clues (which is the hardest level and which is relatd to the sudoku symmetries), then one can generate as many difficulty levels as one wants simply by allowing extra/redundant clues to be visible as well.

Regarding your suggestions: the first part would be a little tricky to handle because the app should be able to distinguish between which digits were present in the original puzzle and which ones were added later on.

Although, you can still upload the partially solved puzzles and get it completed by the app as it can also recognise handwritten digits.

In the three first levels all puzzles are solved through a series of logical deductions. It is not at all necessary to use groundless hypothesis or multiple choices to find any solution.

The fourth level, so called "Extreme" needs "multiple choices" to be solved.
