The government keep lying to me

Telling me that they come to set the people free

Cut the power phones when you catch us on our knees

Heaven please, we're in a state of emergency

See we need a strong God, yeah

We need the real God, yeah

The God with the resurrection power from the grave

To take away the hate, to heal the human race, yeah

The government keep lying to me

Telling me that they come to set the people free

Cut the power phones when you catch us on our knees

Heaven please, we're in a state of emergency

See we need a strong God, real strong, yeah

We need the real God, yeah, yeah

The God with the resurrection power from the grave

To take away the hate, to heal the human race

The government keep lying to me

Telling me that they come to set the people free

Cut the power phones when you catch us on our knees

(On our knees)

Heaven please, we're in a state of emergency

See we need a strong God, yeah

We need the real God

The God with the resurrection power from the grave

(Yes)

To take away the hate

(Yes)

To heal the human race

(Come on)

The video was directed by Joey Papa and shines a light on some of the most serious issues that the world is facing including, poverty, racism, drug addiction, domestic violence and the covid-19 pandemic. Portions of the thought-provoking video were inspired by a recent trip to the Dominican Republic that Franklin took with the non-profit organization, *Compassion International*.

The two welcomed fellow gospel artists Tamela Mann and Marvin Sapp who blessed the live audience, which reached as many as 275,000 people, with surprise performances.

Kirk Franklin sends a message to fans when it comes to Plies saying, "I am not he and he is not I." For years, people have joked that the two are either twin brothers or the same person haha I must admit that the resemblance is strong. Kirk and Plies have both joked at the matter and are obviously cool.

Kirk Franklin is at the forefront of the modern Gospel music scene. It seems he was always destined to lead others in song, as the seven-time Grammy Winning musician, choir leader and author displayed signs of musical virtuosity at a young age. By 12 he was leading his local Church and went on to found a 17 person strong choir called The Family, with which he released a certified platinum debut and the award winning 'Watcha Lookin' 4'.

Expressing life, spirit and love through music, as well as inspiring others to be inspired and reflect on human experience, Franklin takes to the stage with the energy of an evangelical preacher. The love child of James Brown and Mahalia Jackson, the charismatic performer whips up praise and worship euphoria with spirited performances of hip-hop tinged gospel anthems like 'Why We Sing', 'Silver & Gold', 'He Can Handle It' and 'He's Able'. For the best part of three decades Kirk's been bringing it to the masses and has lost none of the career-defining voice and verve that has become has trademark.

Mr. FRANKLIN: Well, I was even talking to someone yesterday about the parenting chapter, talking about just making parents more responsible. And I said, well, until we talk about our casual mindset in this society towards sex, we will never get the parenting situation really dealt with strong, because you have a lot of people that are parents that never really signed up to be parents. They were parents on accident because of our casual attitude towards sex because after the sexual revolution, we are more and more and more and more and more casual about sex. And sex is not only given from God for our pleasure, but sex is also given us from God to procreate.

But how much more stronger could Barack have been? How much more stronger could Kirk had been, if there had been a joint team making it stronger, making it healthy. Because I know. I had a kid when I was 17 and I didn't marry my son's mom. And I have kids by my wife. And I see the difference.

I mean, it is a day and night difference of how healthier the two kids that I have with my wife, because they've got this support team. It's like when I'm dealing with my son and if I'm too strong she comes in with that softer side. And now he's a well-balanced kid. And the same for my daughter.

Raised by an aunt in Ft. Worth, Franklin began dabbling in performing and writing at a young age. "It was never a thought-out plan that I would become a songwriter; it's just something that evolved," he says. "It's much more intense to just want to keep the integrity and the freshness and newness in the process and not use cliches or words that are too common, but to keep the message I write about Christ and Him loving us fresh. [I want] non-secular ears to stay fresh to it and secular ears fresh to it. We've always tried to create a camp that is a witness to both communities - one that is a strong witness to the church and a strong witness to people that probably wouldn't step in the doors of a church."

Yes, He is a strong tower of refuge, filled with living waters that quench every thirst, filled with bread that satisfies the hunger of my soul, filled with Love that is unending, and filled with mercy and forgiveness and grace that is undeserved. And the door is open for all who might enter to seek refuge from the storms.

I used to like standing in the rain, screaming at the lightning and the thunder, vowing that I was strong and would not be defeated, thinking that I could overcome whatever I might face by my own power. But that rain was building a great flood of waters unseen over the horizon, and a wave so large that I would have been swept away like an ant crawling across the ground if I had stayed where I was. But this tower is now my safety from the storms, my salvation.

Many contemporary artists, such as Mary Mary,Mahalia Jackson, and Kirk Franklin, served as crossover artists within thesegenres. They paired their strong faith with expressive jazz techniques, harmonies, and instrumentation. More and more, we are seeing many talentedartists, with both a strong calling to serve their church and a deep faith, whoalso want to pursue a full-time musical career. They have found a way to usetheir creative passion by blending the Gospel and Jazz genres together. Onesuch artist is jazz saxophonist Kirk Whalum.

Mrs. Bush's Welcoming Remarks at In Tune with History

The East RoomWelcome. Thanks for joining us to celebrate the history of music in the White House and in America. Thanks to the DC school choral group for the excellent performance. Today, you too become part of the great musical heritage of the White House. Thanks also to Henry Dudley, Hugh Sidey, Dr. Seale, Dr. Kirk and members of the White House Historical Association. And thank you, John and Sara, for producing a remarkable documentary that tells America's story with tempo and tune. Since the first notes of Yankee Doodle were played here by the Marine Band two hundred years ago, music has defined the spirit of the White House and the spirit of our country. From the patriotic sounds of the Marine Band to jazz, the blues, country and rock and roll, music has bound us as a culture and a country. And the music played in the White House has reflected the times and challenges of our growing republic. Since the days of President Adams, the Marine Band has marked the milestones of America with music -- from the Gettysburg Address to the funeral procession of President Kennedy. Charlie Corrado, who is here with us today, started playing the accordion and the piano in the Marine Band in 1962. He played for President Kennedy's last birthday party. Charlie, thanks for making beautiful music here for the past 41 years. And thanks also to Colonel Foley for your talent and artistic direction as director of the United States Marine Band. As the Marine Band has been the highlight of many moments, the music played here has also inspired many traditions in the White House. It has been said that President Hayes did not like to stay up late -- reminds me of my favorite President. So right after dinner he would cue the Marine Band to play "Home Sweet Home" hoping that his guests would take the hint and go home. I will have to tell George to try that one. During the Coolidge's first Christmas here, Grace Coolidge invited a church choir to sing while the Marine Band played on the north portico. Soon people began to gather outside the fence. So Mrs. Coolidge invited the public onto the lawn, starting a new tradition to open the White House to the public during the holidays. President and Mrs. Hoover first began the tradition of entertaining heads of state after dinner in 1931. At the most recent state dinner for Philippine President Arroyo, opera singer Susan Graham sang Gershwin in this very room. Her accompanist played on the Steinway & Sons piano which is in the Grand Foyer right outside this room. This beautiful instrument was presented to President Franklin Roosevelt in 1938. The paintings on the case of the piano represent five forms of American music which were favorites of FDR, including folk and cowboy music. Since the days of President Madison, there have been at least two pianos in the White House, sometimes three or four. President Roosevelt loved swing music while the Eisenhower's enjoyed show tunes. The Kennedys established the White House as a center of the cultural arts scene by inviting renowned performers and composers and creating youth concerts. To share the music performed here with the world, President and Mrs. Carter created a series of televised concerts called "In Performance at the White House". President Bush and I have continued this tradition with gospel groups Jump-5 and the Blind Boys of Alabama, who played during our Salute to Gospel Music. We enjoy hearing songs from home in the White House and fellow Texan Lyle Lovett performed here for the National Governors Association Dinner in February. I caught the President tapping his toes when BB King gave a rousing performance during a celebration for the Special Olympics. The artists who perform at the White House reflect the depth and breadth of American culture and history -- and their music reminds of us of the diversity that makes America strong. Franklin Roosevelt said, "The inspiration of great music can help to inspire a fervor for the spiritual values in our way of life; and thus to strengthen democracy... Because music knows no barriers of languages. music can make us all more vividly aware of that common humanity which is ours." As it enriches our lives, music shapes our culture and our country. Notes and song connect as us citizens, generations and Americans. And as we will see and hear today, music holds the story of our past and our future. I would now like to introduce someone who knows a great deal about our past and loves sharing it. As a young boy growing up in Iowa in the 1930's, Hugh Sidey must have enjoyed the swing sounds of Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman. He has lived a remarkable life and after reporting for 45 years about the American Presidency, he has amazing stories to share. He was in Vienna for President Kennedy's historic meeting with Nikita Khrushchev, and he traveled with President Nixon to China. He is a witness to history. Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Hugh Sidey. ### Printer-Friendly Version Email this page to a friend
