When you connect a scanner to your device or add a new scanner to your home network, you can usually start scanning pictures and documents right away. If your scanner doesn't automatically install, here's some help to get things working.

In most cases, all you have to do to set up a scanner is to connect it to your device. Plug the USB cable from your scanner into an available USB port on your device, and turn the scanner on. If that doesn't work, here's a way to do it manually.

If your scanner is turned on and connected to the network, Windows should find it automatically. Available scanners can include all scanners on a network, such as Bluetooth and wireless scanners or scanners that are plugged into another device and shared on the network. Here's a way to do it manually.

If you use wireless access points, extenders or multiple wireless routers with separate SSIDs, you'll need to ensure that you're connected to the same network as the scanner for your PC to find and install it.

If your scanner is included in a multifunction or All-In-One printer, you may only see the name of your printer. To see your scanner, under Printers & scanners, select your installed printer, select Manage, and then choose your scanner.

After your scan is finished, select View to see the scanned file before you save it, or select Close to save it. You can edit the scanned document or picture in the preview that appears when you select View.

The IJ Scan Utility is needed in order to scan photos and documents from your scanner to your computer. This is included in the MP Drivers package or Driver Setup Package (depending on your model) and may have been installed when you first set up the printer.

If you have not already installed the MP Drivers package or Driver Setup Package you can find downloads for those here: Software and Drivers.

Mac user? If you are using a Mac computer, learn how to download and run the IJ Scan Utility on a Mac.

Once the IJ Scan Utility is open, be sure that your device is listed at the top of the window. Place your photo or document on the scanner, and then choose either Photo or Document on the IJ Scan Utility to initiate the scan.

If you have more than one scanner or have changed from a USB connection to a network connection, you'll need to set the network environment from the IJ Scan Utility. Learn how to set network scan settings. You can also visit this article to learn how to use the IJ Scan Utility.

Is there any way to start ScanGear directly from a Windows 10 desktop and not go thru the IJ Scan Utility? I prefer the way it was about 6 years ago. I hate this dumbed down approach. Also, why do I have to go thru settings each and every time I want to change either the filename or destination? In the old ScanGear, you could do that directly. This it makes it vary hard to scan several documents one after the other.

I am using a Pixma MX922 (just purchased). The major use of the scanner is to scan documents for my records. I usually scan a number of documents at a time with different descriptive filenames. Having each time I start a new document, I need to restart ScanGear, go to settings to set the filename, scan the document, close scangear, is cumbersome and a waste of time. Besides that I can't check the pages before the file is created, to perhaps rotate one or even not convert one of the pages. This process is so bad, I am sorely tempted to return the MX922 and get a new Epson WF-3640, eventhough the MX922 is a better printer.

I knew that but that means extra keystrokes and time. First go to the settings page and change the filename and then return to the scangear page. Also, that means that I have to remember to go to the settings page. In the old Canon software, the filename was on the scangear page and you didn't have to think about and could quickly make the change in filename.

If you have a Mac, instructions to obtain the IJ Scan Utility can be found here. Please note that depending on your product, the IJ Scan Utility may be bundled with the scanner driver.

Used to scan fine wirelessly to my Mac, as recently as a few months ago.

Occasionally will mysteriously work.

I have rebooted the router, connected over and over with wps (pita and has to be done over and over, works sometimes yes and sometimes no). Rebooted the scanner. Rebooted the computer. Have also uninstalled/reinstalled drivers every way possible.

Reconfigured in IJ network utility.

Try to scan, and in the scan menu it shows the name of my macbook at the bottom of the screen on the printer. But it tells me to 'set the pc to start scanning.' Then will not let me do so. Even though the name is RIGHT THERE.

And the network is listed in the settings, and the password saved. (have done extensive rebooting).

IJ scan utility says "searching for printer" and even though it is added, can't find it. It does detect that I just hit the scan button on the printer though. So it knows it's there, it just doesn't fully connect.

Drops out and occasionally has the red x symbol on the wifi, however, it doesn't scan when it shows connected either. Right now wifi is connected, no red x.

Our internet is solid and the signal is strong.

My workflow is not practical to initiate it from the computer which is suggested as a workaround. I am trying to fix the scanner to work as it should. I want it to automatically connect (as it previously did), scan to my computer and that's it.

I am very close to flinging this thing off a high cliff and never buying a Canon printer again.

Canon charges for technical support, which isn't helpful. Their products should work and they should help you if they do not.

Can someone help? Canon tech support, are you out there?

Thank you

So I went to follow up on this tonight. Long story short, it's mysteriously working now. I uninstalled the driver about a week ago. Tonight, reinstalled both the scanner and the printer driver. (In my case, mcpd-mac-mg7700-16_20_0_0-ea21_3 (1).dmg and misd-mac-ijscanner15f-4_1_3-ea21_3 (1).dmg which were recommended when typing in my model number.

A link from there recommended mcpd-mac-mg7700-16_40_1_0-ea21_3 (1).dmg but I did not install that one.

I installed these drivers without the USB connected and perhaps that helped.

This system starts to feel like a linux upgrade breaking everything taking me hours to patch up everything. If this is how Apple updates its os, then stop pushing us to constantly update. Or do a proper job with the driver continuity.

Start Scanner Software (EPSON Scan) DirectlyTo save scanned images without editing them in an application, start EPSON Scan directly. After scanning images, the scanned images are automatically saved as files in the folder specified in the File Save Settings dialog box. This operation can be set up as follows:

Note: If Show this dialog box before next scan is checked, the File Save Settings window appears automatically. Specify the folder in which you want to save your scanned images. Click the My Documents or My Pictures radio button (Windows XP or 2000), or the Documents or Pictures radio button (Windows Vista or Mac OS X). If you want to change the default location, click Other, then click Browse (for Windows) or Choose (for Macintosh) and select a desired folder. If you want to save your image on the desktop, simply click Other. Specify a file name with an alphanumeric character string (prefix) and a 3-digit number (start number). If you want to change the file name, type an alphanumeric character string in Prefix and select a start number. The name of a file is generated using a combination of the prefix and number specified here.Note:For Windows users, the following characters cannot be used in the prefix.

\, /, :, ., *, ?, ", , |For Macintosh users, you cannot use colon (:) in the prefix. The number must be 3 digits.  Select a file format from the following table. Depending on the selected file format, the Options button may be available so that you can make detailed settings for scanned images.Format

(File Extension)

A TIFF format where multiple pages are saved to the same file. When you scan documents using the Automatic Document Feeder, they are all stored in the same file. (With other formats, each document is saved in a separate file.) However, to open the Multi-TIFF files, you need an application supporting this format.

A document format that is independent of platforms. To use PDF documents, you need Adobe Reader or Acrobat. When you scan documents using the Automatic Document Feeder, multiple pages are saved to a single file. When you save color or grayscale images in PDF, you can select a compression quality.

Click OK.EPSON Scan starts scanning. The scanned image is automatically saved in the specified location. If the Open image folder after scanning check box in the File Save Settings dialog box is selected, Windows Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Macintosh) automatically opens the folder where the scanned image is saved when EPSON Scan finishes scanning.

I have a rather older Canon scanner Pixma MP 110. Of course, Canon does not provide any useful drivers (their site is really desperate, frustrating and useless in all means) - the only software I found is a Chinese version with question marks everywhere.

However, if I go to Devices and printers manager under Windows and right-click the scanner, I may use Windows-integrated scanning manager that is in my native language. It has somewhat limited features but is still better than a bunch of buttons full of question marks. ff782bc1db
