Yet as Christian missionaries arrived in Africa in the early 19th century, mission schools became a major source of education, including musical training. Today, gospel music permeates the fabric of southern Africa, home to more than 5,000 independent Christian churches, many of which hold services in the open air.

The Soweto Gospel Choir was formed in Soweto, South Africa, by David Mulovhedzi and Beverly Bryer, and producers Andrew Kay, David Vigo and Cliff Hocking in 2002.[1] The more than 30-member ensemble blends elements of African gospel, Negro spirituals, reggae and American popular music. The group performed at the first of the 46664 concerts for Nelson Mandela and has since toured internationally several times.

We have many traditional churches and smaller non-denominational churches and groups that have a different agenda than just the Gospel. Some want to make money out of very poor people, some want lots of congregants to give them better status. The religious authorities are very opposed to gospel workers, as they think we are going to take their people away from them. It is not true. Yet, we have religious freedom and can be minister of the gospel to people without fear of government persecution.

Well, by the end of that day I realized I had a brand new vocabulary and I could remember Scriptures from my younger years in Sunday School.

Since then the desire to bring the GOOD NEWS has burned in my being and I have preached, taught, evangelized, led Home Cells, played in Church Bands, created gospel tracts, written hundreds of letters, prayed for the sick, counselled drunks, drug-addicts and sex-workers, encouraged people to go into ministry, ministered to those in ministry, and for four years (2008-2012) been pastoring a home based church of about 30-40 people. Since 2013 I have been translating Scripture from Aramaic to Afrikaans and scaled down to leading a Home Cell of about 5-8 people. Our Home Fellowship had to break up due to everybody and us moving all over the world to different towns and countries!

As gospel fans lie in wait to hear reassigned dates for highly anticipated events, gospel music artistes are making sure that in the meantime, those fans can be on the look out for new music, too. Decorated performer Chevelle Franklyn recently confirmed the global release of her upcoming single, ' Go In Your Strength', which is scheduled for release on radio and all digital platforms on April 3.

In her frequent travels, Franklyn has become a familiar face on the African gospel scene. There, she has toured multiple countries as a headlining act. She has even taken centre-stage on one of gospel music's biggest soundstages on the continent, the world's largest one-day faith-based concert called The Experience. Annually, the event brings in upwards of 800,000 patrons to Lagos, Nigeria.
