That's not the case for 24-year-old Jamar McNaughton, however. Better known by his stage name of Chronixx, McNaughton just released his debut LP, Chronology, a 16-track collection bringing together songs from across his musical career, some dating back to 2011. Now he holds the No. 1 spot on the iTunes reggae top 10. It is a potentially stressful moment to be trying to make a breakthrough, but Chronixx remains unbothered and optimistic.

Let's talk about Chronology. You cover the whole spectrum of what people know as Jamaican music. How did this record come together?

The songs are songs that I've been writing from when I was a teenager. I don't write as much in books and stuff like that. I continuously mediate music for years sometimes before it actually manifests itself into an actual song. The inspiration on this album is from various places, different songs, different cultures. I felt it was the right time to do it because now I had more influences and because I felt the motivation for this project was love. Whenever love becomes the motivation then the work becomes timeless. It's more than classic. It's timeless and full of meaning. Meaning that can stretch across generations. Relevance that can stretch across many generations.

What do you want this album to accomplish? What do you want this album to bring to the world and bring back to you?

I don't really expect nothing of it still, really. Because it's music and it will do exactly what it is supposed to do, without or with human help. The greatest thing we can do is turn out the music and that is what we have already done. The one thing I hope is that I perform the songs the right way on stage. And get to sing them so people can fall in love with it the way I did. That's one thing I hope. I don't really have much expectation of it, really. It's like pressuring your children with your own expectations. Let the songs do what they want to do and be what they want to be.

If you've been paying attention to some of the most popular songs of the summer in recent years, you'll notice that many feature musical influences from Jamaican genres like dancehall and reggae. This has not escaped the notice of reggae star Chronixx, who released his new album Chronology last week.

While he's cognizant of the influence Jamaican music wields on popular songs now, Chronixx is also immersed in the historical importance of the music emerging from his native country, something he underlines in the video for his latest single "Likes."

Chronixx was in his element on Friday night as he delivered a brilliant two-hour set. Thrilling with a plethora of songs, including They Don't Know, Smile Jamaica, Likes, Here Comes Trouble, Capture Land and Behind Curtain, the singer took patrons on a memorable musical journey, as he ensured that they got their monies worth and then some.

Yeah, man. Sometimes not even on purpose, but these are songs that have been a part of my meditation from I was a child, so these are like the seeds were everything grow from. All my song-writing principles, everything that I practice in music comes from these things.

No, we used to go into the studio, and we used to have our own little talent shows at home, where you would make yourself sing whatever you wanted to sing. And then we now as children, we would always like to make up our own songs, or create our own versions of things, but we would start performing for ourselves and for [our father] and for family, til eventually we started to sing in church, til eventually we started to sing at weddings. So different stages, you know?
