Good morning everyone! I happened to check out a short reel on my IG of John Summit playing a remix of Shannon's Let The Music Play but I cannot find the exact Track ID. Some say that it's the Freak On remix but I have not been able to find it anywhere. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Have a great week!

You could remix a song anyway you want and play it back in a DJ set, it's similar to any other song. Now, venues should pay for songs DJs play via BMI/SESAC/ASCAP and similar performance royalty associations. Usually a lump sum where the big guys get most of the money, ack.

Kent you are the man!! Thanks for the help. When you say that licensing would be required for releasing a live version you are still referring to if I were to *sell* any live performance version of the remix right? If so, I will keep my remixes off any of the albums I sell and produce. However, I will perform my remixes at venues I play in (and get paid to play in), I'll also upload my remixes to youtube, myspace etc... I'll allow people to download the remixes for free from my website too.

If you are using samples from the original song for your recording, that's then another licensing part that is needed from the label/musicians. Usually that gets so complicated so it's easier to just play all the music yourself.

Are you sure about this? With a remix you actually alter/change the song from how it was intended by the original creators without them knowing about it, putting on a record/cd with the originals or original remixes (=licensed remixes) is something the original creator is aware of its existence.

In the Netherlands I believe you may remix any song without permission, as long as it stays "inside". The moment someone plays the remix (dj or ableton live), the public is presented with a version that is not official and in fact not even known by the original creator, and therefor not permitted.

You could play a DJ set or any other performance set any way you want, otherwise most DJs would be without a job. Or bar bands would be sued by artists as they didn't sound 1:1 as the original recording. As for recording and selling an existing track, that's another story, you need a mechanical license. Unless this was one of those tragic delta blues artists whose songs have been ripped billions of times with no money getting back to them.

No, you have to get a mechanical license for the song if you are going to record and distribute it, free or not. If you use original samples you need to clear those too, free or not. No difference. Perform whatever you want, publish you need to play by the publishing rules.

Where would I go about obtaining a license for a song like "Shout" by Tears for Fears? I know they very likely won't let me remix it, but according to what you've said, how could I inquire about obtaining the license?

The song is known for its distorted guitars, use of synthesizers (especially with drums and lyrics), and Steven Tyler's patois-style singing. The chorus of the song also features the phrase "fuckin' A" which is bleeped out through use of a turntable for much of the song; until the end, when the expletive can actually be heard a few times. The radio edit bleeps this out while the radio remix replaces the lyrics. The song also features a reference to "Walk This Way".

The song was performed heavily on Aerosmith's Just Push Play Tour and was also featured in Dodge Ram commercials, during the band's 2001 partnership with the car company.[2] The song was also played during Aerosmith's performance at the historic United We Stand: What More Can I Give benefit concert in October 2001. The track was also included in Aerosmith's 2002 career-spanning compilation O, Yeah! Ultimate Aerosmith Hits, but was a radio-edit version of the track instead of the original.

The issue that I am having is that for some reason Alexa - NOT Google so please do not link me to the issue that is about Google Assistant as it WORKS fine with Google. But when I request songs through Alexa - even when I clearly state the song and artist I get a LIVE version or the song by another artist. At this point, I have to go into the Spotify app on my phone, look for the song and then play on the device. It defeats the purpose of a voice command smart device.

Many songs I do request are IN my liked songs or in one of my playlist or in my favourites. It's simple - create a filter that you can associate with your account that sets your preference to non-live non-covers. I mean they presumably have embedded tags like MP3s back in the day. If we could filter in the '90s and early 2000's using Winamp certainly we should be able to in 2020. I will pose the same issue on some Alexa/Amazon forum but really this should be a preference in Spotify NOT the apps connecting to it.

If you want to become the kind of DJ who always not only knows what to play next but actually has the balls to do it, you need to flip your thinking. Right song first, figure out a way to mix it next.

Having some issues with Apple Music. I get the message "This song is not currently available in your country or region" when it's added to a playlist. However, searching for the song in Apple Music allows me to play it.

Thanks for responding. I've had this issue for about 3 years - it impacts 45 of my songs on my "top 100 songs of all time" playlist. Most of them were ripped from CDs I own ... and the other songs on those albums are never impacted. After digging into this one evening I noticed the "last modified" date on the impacted songs is later than the other songs on the album from which they came. Why does a later modified date or updated meta data cause the iphone to refuse to play a track? This seems like a bug in their copyright protection efforts.

I am having this same issue and it's driving me nuts. I've NOT unsubscribed from Apple Music at all. I've had it constantly for about 3 years and there is no issue with my account. I've noticed the songs that it won't download to my phone, but will populate ( albeit grayed out and gives me the "cannot play in your country or region" error when I have NOT left the US or changed any of those settings) in the music app, are songs that are remixes of songs I've downloaded from the artist legally, but outside iTunes. The files are compatible, but what's weird is even older files I've never had issues with won't download to my phone.
