Ok let's address the elephant in the room - Run, Hide, Fight is controversial. Of course it is. Besides the sensitive matter of guns and schools and kids dying... the movie also goes out of its way to flaunt various 'buzz words' in what could easily be interpreted as a way to mock them, like when a shooter kills a student and says 'trigger warning'. Critics were, for the most part extremely harsh on this movie. They bash it for its insensitivity, its exploitation of a sensitive subject, its shallowness.

Lets just get the biggest, most obviously 'wrong' thing out there first. How ought one view a teen who goes and methodically plans a massacre in his school? What punishment is just? What level of pity, or hate, does he deserve? The movie makes the choice to add a very serious tone to the characters and their personal traumas. One shooter is scarred by an incident in middle school, and since then views all his peers and teachers with distrust, construing every laugh and comment he hears in the worst possible way, forever in the shadow of that trauma. Another is deeply disturbed, insecure, on medication for the voices he hears. The mastermind of the operation feels wronged by the system, and wants to prove himself to the world and immortalize himself. Whatever comments you might have about whether or not these actually are realistic motivations or well fleshed out characters, my point is this - the movie addresses real issues, lingers on them and fleshes them out with decent amounts of dialogue. It is at the very least, attempting to bring to light real world, serious issues. No matter its underlying motivations, these characters didn't feel like cartoonish villains. I saw in them traumas and insecurities that made the at the very least a little understandable, if not altogether relatable.

And then theres the whole criticism of authority figures aspect of the movie. The teachers failed their students due to various selfishness and insensitivity on their part. Supposedly the scheme is able to play out to such length because of inefficient bureaucratic decisions on the part of the school board, which the shooters brag about knowing all about because they're on public record and voted on and the shooters claim those inefficiencies give them the window to further escalate their violence... and what about the police officers, who are shown to be incapable to dealing with any of the shooters, but do arrest zoe's dad after he saves her life sniping a teen with an automatic weapon, and later other officers when the finally enter the school zip tie zoe's hands and throw her into the back of a police van?

So what, in an active shooter situation, is the movie espousing that you ought to run back in when you have a chance to leave because the authorities are incompetent and you need to warn your classmates? Should experienced hunters set up camp with their rifles to help take down the shooters? Sure that can't be what the director actually supports in his head.. or is it?

And one final note, at one point in the movie the diversity really started feeling forced and almost insulting. Like we have the shy nerdy asian girl, who dies early on and dies in zoe's lap and is basically the only innocent death which is lingered upon. The steotypical 'innocent asian girl'? Or what about the black best friend? When we hit 'hot latina spanish teacher', and the teen shooter asks her to strip in order to protect her class.. Maybe I should have just dropped it at that point. I was tempted to.

Perhaps the director isn't malicious, perhaps he doesn't think that teen shooters deserve to slowly bleed out and drown as his lungs fill with blood.. but at the very least this director chose to make a serious, dramatic, realistic, but also campy action movie. And the tonal clash was seriously a bad idea that made the movie completely fail to entertain me at all. 2351a5e196
